I miss the ocean, the smell of the ocean, the sand on my feet, the tide pools. The "wow" coming over the hill and seeing the mighty Pacific and feeling the cool breeze hit your face like air conditioning. I miss wearing shorts and flip/flops in February. I miss coastal micro climates, being hot at day time and needing a sweat shirt at night. I miss bbq tri tip. I miss dutch crunch bread. I miss good sourdough bread. I miss the smell of agriculture, wild flowers & herbs, and fresh fruit. The access and availability of very high quality produce, and festivals for this and that veggie or fruit. I miss being able have the choice on a weekend to be in drastically different places. Do you want an weekend urban getaway in San Fran? or Carmel? or Napa? or Santa Barbara or Tahoe, or Palm Springs? or San Diego? Redwoods?
I could go on, but.......there are things I dont miss to, but thats not what this thread is all about.
Yeah, all of that except the tri tip. The beef here is grass and grain fed and where we buy it there are no additives, hormones, antibiotics, etc., just pure, lean black angus real beef for real people! We can always get tri tips and they're a staple on our grill. I'm also surprised by the vartiety and freshness of the produce we get here but it doesn't quite measure up to California's.

Don't have them fancy garlic, orange, crayfish an' asparagus type festivals here but we'uns got Hillbilly Days an' Bluegrass an' hunt deer to feed the po' folks!

Here are the things I missed when we moved to Colorado:

* Mild year round weather - it's funny how many things this effects
* Being able to do many, many outdoor activities year round comfortably like hiking, water skiing, surfing, swimming, tennis, etc...
* All the fresh produce grown locally
* The Pacific Ocean - probably the biggest for me
* Indian Summer at the beach in Dec/Feb
* Ability to grow gardens, plants, etc... year round
* Cultural diversity and the great foods and interesting international people one meets
* Unique, creative, intelligent businesses vs. Big Box USA
* Ppl thinking outsided the box more often in business
* Trader Joes!

I have some friends who moved here to Maryland from California. All of them are always talking about the beaches and sunshine. I have to admit someone who grew up going to Laguna Beach or Huntington or Santa Monica will be VERY unimpressed by Ocean City, MD or Virginia Beach or the Delaware coast. I can also understand how someone can't help but complain about freezing temperatures in the wintertime when they've grown up in a good warm climate. They also miss authentic Mexican food and how "fashionable" Californians are. At least Baltimore tends to be very blue collar, informal, not very dressy for the most part though Californians do like visiting New York or DC. People have also mentioned the proximity of California to Las Vegas and in better days, Mexico as well.

I have two friends who specifically miss In N Out and Jack in the Box which do not exist here! I think they go as far out as Texas but not this far. I had Jack in the Box in Texas and it was better than most fast food burger places.

Although not a native, I lived in CA for 19 years, then moved near Detroit.

We do not miss Mexican food becasue Detroit has an area called the Mexican villiage with food every bit asgood as the various places called "Taco"

We miss the mountains more than the ocean. We have great lakes with wodnerful beaches, but lacking the cool ocean small (and dolphins). We have wonderful forests, rivers and streams. However we have no muntains. Not even large hills.

We also miss all the great resturaunts within a mile or two of your house. We have great resturaunts, but you have to drive a way usually. Fortuantely, you can drive without sitting in traffic.

I miss the Santa Ana winds too, but my wife hated them. We get big winds too. The biggest ones are called tornados and they take our barns and trailer parks away.

We miss Carls Jr. Everything else in fast food (except In & Out) is here too.

We miss my income or at least part of it.

We miss having equity in our house (yes, it is even worse here).

We miss sitting outside without smelling like Deep woods off.

On the other hand, A lot of things here are better. There are a lot of things that we do not miss.

I don't have to miss the wind, got plenty of them here. I have been known to refer to the friskier ones as santa anas...

I am VERY glad to be away from Eucalyptus. I'm very allergic to its pollen and there is nowhere in socal at least that its floating about in the air.

Only things I miss are seeing mountains, though I usually saw them veiled in lovely smog. And Trader Joes... why don't they sell their non-food stuff on-line?????

Can't say I miss beastly hot days, since we get them here too. Just not as often. Major heat warnings going on here right now.

I miss the mountains of California more than the ocean.
I do miss being able to buy tri-tip,it is so hard to find here and when i do it is double the price! But when i go back "home" i load up and pack it in my suitcase
I do miss great mexican food and fresh ocean air. I really miss Big Sur,Calif. I was 26 miles away and spent a lot of time camping there through out the years or taking a drive down for a picnic.Nothing like getting close to Pfeifer State Park and the smell of the river and tree's -it is magical!
I miss the "mindset" of Calif. people,or as someone else said "thinking outside the box".
I miss being able to buy alcohol any darn time i feel and in a grocrey store, not in a ABC store where i feel as if i am going into a porn shop or something!
Fresh produce and fresh fish is really, really missed.
