Default Small town near big city

I am going to graduate soon with my nursing degree and I want to get a job in a children's hospital in a big city in Northern california, but I want to live in a small town thats nice and has nice people with good schools. When I say small I mean really small, at least under 10,000 but preferably less than 5,000. Does anyone have any suggestions. I love the beach, but I love the mountains more especially ones with ski resorts.

Most Children's Hospitals are in larger metropolitan areas. I would look for those which are close the the coast or mountains. Two good locations appear to be:
Packard Children's Hospital - Stanford University Medical Center
Children's Center at Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento (http://checksutterfirst.org/children/about/ - broken link)

If you work in Sacramento you could live further up I80 toward Rocklin. From I80 towns (Rocklin, Auburn, etc...) you could then drive into North Lake Tahoe for great skiing.

There's also Shriners Children's Hospital in Sacramento.

There is also Children's Hospital Central California north of Fresno. It is one of the 10 largest free-standing Children's Hospitals in the US. The hospital moved to the 50 acre complex in 1998. It sits on a bluff overlooking the San Joaquin River.

That would put you less than a 2 hour drive from Yosemite.

Closest skiing would be at China Peak (formerly called Sierra Summit). The former CEO of Kirkwood Mountain Resort just purchased the resort and will be upgrading facilities and services over the next few years.

or ski at Badger Pass in Yosemite
