My basic question is: how can I become a social studies teacher (cheaply?) in California?

I already hold bachelors from U of Wisconsin-Madison in History and Classical Humanities. For 2+ years I substitute taught in Title 1 Louisiana schools. Currently, I teach ESL in Budapest Hungary. All I lack is the piece of paper that says I can teach in America.

What are my options? I'm having trouble getting my questions answered from Europe.

Thanks!

Hi Magistra. In California most likely you would have to go through 2 semesters of student teaching. As a reading specialist, I hold a multiple subjects credential so I am making guesses as to requirements for a single subject credential, but am thinking there will probably be some other classes you will need to become a teacher. This website is for a California State University and you should be able to find some basic info there. Single Subject Credential Program, CSULB
Sorry, but I know of no cheap and quick way. Good luck!

Don't, after 20 years apiece in the teaching profession NCLB is driving us out.
