California Pines made the news today. Modoc County is broke, but they want to keep the hospital open, so they passed a surtax to pay the state back for a loan. Apparently much of the tax base of the country is the subdivision of California Pines, comprised mostly of empty lots owned by out of the area people, (which makes sense, the lots were originally sold to out of the area people, and to particular minorities, and were sold sight unseen many of the lots). The land is logged over second growth with slash and stumps over most of it.

The opponent of the surtax has said that the county depends on the property owners in the subdivision to pay their property taxes and surtax. But, he feels the absentee owners will walk away from the lots rather than pay more taxes, they also have homeowners dues, but the lots are only worth about $11,000 each.
