It's really cool how the poppies bloom around here in the Spring. Then in some areas they continue on - kinda like an extended Spring. Yesterday I walked with my kids down to the beach and we saw poppies sprouting up out of the ground in various spots. And it's almost Fall!

When i was attending Monterey High the population of all the local towns was much lower then now. Louie's Pool Hall & the Owl Club were still on Alvarado St.

My Dad was Army, stationed at Fort Ord. We lived in Stilwell Park. At one point in time i was in charge of all the baggers at the Commisary, & i worked at one of the gas stations. Every time there was a race at Laguna Seca, the Ft Ord Teen Club had a booth we worked. There are some Wonderful Memories from back then.

I attended MPC for two years & drove school bus routes during that time. It was Fun. I had a radio.

We love the great beauty of rural land in CA, exploring it, boonie camping, & fishing waterways that were not too crowded, at that time. We also love the great beauty of rural OR. We were fortunate to buy our forest, mountain place here when prices were more reasonable.

Another Beauty i enjoyed were the fine, small succulents that had purple, pink, or orange flowers. The succulents would spread to cover a hillside. Awesome.

Bro, it must be Wonderful that your beloved son loves photography, as you do.

Hope this works,,

Wasn't there a thread exactly like this a couple weeks ago?

If Money Was No Object, Where in CALIFORNIA Would You Live?

I'll put down my same response:

I'd still live in a neighborhood on a medium sized lot in the Conejo Valley. My parents and wife's parents live in the area so we'd be close to them. I like the community and the weather. I'd want to be in a community with neighbors so my kids would have friends to play with. I wouldn't want a huge isolated lot for that reason. Maybe North Ranch.

Carmel by the Sea will not give you sun. It will give you lots and lots of fog. Carmel Valley is a different story but you won't be able to walk places the way you want.

Yep, we see those flowers alot. Very nice to them.

It sounds like you purchased in a nice part of Oregon. We almost moved to Oregon ourselves. I love the PNW. But my wife wanted to be closer to family while our kids are growing up. So Monterey is a nice place for us right now. I'm sure it has grown since you lived here. But for us it is still like a small town environment, especially since we both lived in SoCal and I grew up in LA County. In fact for me the area is just right. Not too much traffic or people. But still a lot to see and do. And it's only ~1.5 hours to San Jose when we need to get to a major airport, etc...

But still I think about possibly retiring in OR or WA someday.

Derek

I will come and stay a week in Carmel and a week in La Jolla. Perhaps that will help me to decide. Thanks everyone for the input.

I hope so. It's either that, deja vu or a senior moment.

The Monterey Bay area, hands down! Born in San Diego, lived in La Jolla, raised in Newport Beach, fell in love with the Monterey area while stationed at Fort Ord in the 60s. I'd trade almost constant sunshine for the rocky coastline, some fog and sea mammals anytime. Add fewer people and I think it's a winner.
