This may sound sort of crazy but I was wondering if bedbugs can hide in your luggage and set up living quarters in your house. I've heard that New York City has the worse bedbug problem in the U.S. Last week I attended my cousin's wedding in NYC and stayed in the Bronx in sort of a poor section. I didn't notice bedbugs but I think they can hide in clothing for quite a while and travel with you. Also, I read that Los Angeles ranks #10 for bedbugs. I hate the idea of bedbugs and wonder if anyone has any experience with these nasty insects?

They'd bite your ass if you had any contact with them. You're probably safe.

A few Portland hotels (NOT dives, either) have been discovered with bedbugs. And since these are more upscale lodgings it scares the hell out of me even more.

We're headed to California in less than a week and need to read up on what to do.

Bedbugs are hitchhikers and they are carried from place to place on your luggage and clothing. That's how they spread. When I go to a hotel before I open my luggage (which is polycarbonate) I inspect the bedding, drapes and fiurniture. If I see bedbugs or their eggs I am outta there! I do not want to bring this into my home. You can go to Bed Bug Registry - Check Apartments and Hotels Across North America before you check into a hotel to see whether they have had bed bug problems in the past. If so, you might want to reconsider booking a room there. There are also numerous sites on the internet that will teach you what to look for and how to look for evidence of a bed bug infestation.

Do not put your luggage in the closet, don't put it on the bed, put it on the luggage stand(after you take a look at it). Then, as others have said, pull back the sheets, look under the mattress(and on top for blood spotting), behind the headboard, drapes, etc.

They're not a sign of filth, they aren't attracted to trash or anything, they just have come back to the US as hotels have gotten lax and international travel has increased dramatically.
