I think this really boils down to personal preferences for things to do. Our family loves the outdoors, mountains, coast and year round decent weather to enjoy them in. So being away from those things would really limit the things we like to do most. Even when we lived in CO which has gorgeous mountains we felt limited as there is no coast for 1000+ miles and you are landlocked in the middle of the country surrounded by farms, prairies, etc... The long Winters also get to a person unless they are used to doing things indoors more. You can't go skiing everyday. And with ice on the roadways and all the accidents which occur in that kind of weather it wouldn't be safe even if you could (had a annual ski pass or something).

I think they were referring to city things to do.. As OP posted they liked the city life of NY and Chicago...

OP it is doable, but not on your budget. I would suggest just finding ways to cut back...(better gas mileage car/cheaper cell phone/no cable tv/less eating out, etc)
