Hi there, I just found this forum and thought I'd respond about the Bakersfield topic.
I've lived in Bakersfield now for 20 years and really like it. I was raised in Houston, Tx so relocating to anywhere in California was a dream. Regarding the heat: I would rather take 105 degrees of dry heat in Bakersfield compared to 92 degrees w/100% humidity like they have in Texas. THERE REALLY IS A DIFFERENCE! Seriously, August and September are typically the hottest months in Bakersfield (high 90's-100's). You can keep your AC on 79 degrees and be comfortable (not like in Houston, where you had to keep it on 70 just to get the 'wet' out of the air). Many people here have dual units ('swamp coolers' and AC's) on their homes. The coolers are efficient and can keep your house cool until it gets above mid-90's; then you switch to AC).
If you're searching for a family friendly environment, Bakersfield is great. There are many churches here too (we're known as the most conservative part of the state, next to Orange County). If you're single or like to party there's probably something for you too, but many people complain about the lack of 'stuff to do' (clubs, singles stuff, etc...). It depends what you like.
What's great about Bakersfield is that you're 2 hours from the beach, 2 hours from LA (if you MUST go there for shopping or whatever), and 1 hour from the snow (Tehachapi, when it snows in winter). The Kern River comes from the mountains right to Bakersfield and is a great place for white water rafting; people from LA love to come up on holidays to escape LA).
The cost of living is cheaper here than in any other area of the state. You can still buy a decent house for under $300,000. I prefer the west-side (Cal-State area, west of Gosford). We lived on the east side by the high school in the CC area but moved as the crime from Niles St. kept 'inching' its way north towards us. There are more problems on the east and south sides of town w/gangs. I know many people who grew up on the east side (it's hilly, a couple of degrees cooler, grown trees, etc...) and then moved to the west or northwest once they had families of their own.

I think Bakersfield is grody. It's the smog pit of Southern Claifornia and is almost NEVER under 100 degrees in the summer. I have been there numerous times. There is NOTHING to do but stay inside and watch TV and beware of the gang violence outside and the city is infested with emo suicidal people. Not to be offensive

Temps below 100 degrees in the Summer is not a rare occurence in Bakersfield, and as a matter of fact it's going to remain in the 90's all week, and at 5pm today it was only 85 degrees.
Yeah our Summer can get Hot,but their are other places that have more Extreme Heat for a longer period of time than in Bakersfield...We have the influence of the Marine Layer from time to time that gives us relief whenever the temps are in the 100+ range.
Their are alot of things to do in Bakersfield and the surrounding area, especially if your into Outdoor Activities.
You gotta be kidding if you think Bakersfield is a Gang Infested City with Emo People.LOL....I honestly don't know what part of town you've visited, but Bakersfield is a rather Safe City for it's size.

Thats just ridiculous, you should do a little research before you post on someplace you know nothing about, and Bakersfield is not So. California.

I lived in Bakersfield for a few years and here is the real deal as long as you do not have brown skin and are not too classy or too educated you will fit right in with the locals. You will fare better if you have some family in the area or at least two or three friends because the people in this town are not very helpful or friendly. A down on your luck town with a few prime home areas, but all of the apartments are pretty much in the same boat--- overpriced with nosey or rude or mean neighbors though I want to believe if you are their kind of person you will not have too many problems. Oh, Oildale is full of rednecks, but does have the cheaper housing and there is one decent apartment complex in the area though it does have a lot of earwigs. You won't feel Oildale is terrible unless again like I said you have brown skin or a lot of class. Good Luck!!!

I love bakersfield ca!
Well I am a Bakersfield ca plumbing contractor and I think it is great here. It is what you are used to really. Not much else really matters but what you think of it. I love running a plumbing company here and wouldn't have it any other way. It is great here.
