That is the discussion. The thread is titled "Worst Ghetto in California", and I assumed we're using "ghetto" in the colloquial sense.

Here are some FBI statistics, so we don't have to rely on silly youtube videos for most of our evidence:

The 40 highest CA cities of 50,000+ people by total violent crime rate, 2008:

1. Oakland - 1,968.4
2. Compton - 1,838.8
3. Stockton - 1,474.7
4. Richmond - 1,074.9
5. San Bernardino - 1,033.8
6. San Francisco - 1,024.1
7. Sacramento - 997.7
8. Vallejo - 953.8
9. Lynwood - 937.8
10. Huntington Park- 903.6
11. Hawthorne - 883.4
12. Inglewood - 869.1
13. Antioch - 868.9
14. national City - 818.3
15. Lancaster - 809.4
16. Santa Cruz - 807.2
17. Madera - 805.1
18. Merced - 778.6
19. Pomona - 755.9
20. Salinas - 731.6
21. Tulare - 720.5
22. Santa Maria - 717.1
23. Paramount - 711.8
24. Modesto - 699.4
25. Redding - 698.7
26. Bellflower - 689.9
27. Los Angeles - 689.5
28. Long Beach - 676.2
29. San Leandro - 662.2
30. Turlock - 656.7
31. El Monte - 650.1
32. Berkeley - 644.5
33. Bakersfield - 637.0
34. Riverside - 642.0
35. Gardena - 627.4
36. Hayward - 615.7
37. South Gate - 615.4
38. Santa Monica - 612.1
39. Palmdale - 607.9
40. Carson - 606.4
41. Union City - 599.4
42. Victorville - 597.5
43. Hemet - 594.8
44. Fresno - 584.8
45. Santa Barbara - 573.5

47. Rialto - 560.9
48. Visalia - 554.0
49. Moreno Valley - 553.0

I would just throw a guess out there and say that in general, the CA cities with the higher violent crime rates are going to have some combination of the most/the worst ghettos of all CA cities.

East Palo Alto and San Jose are nowhere on the list. Interesting.

East Palo Alto has a population less than 50,000 people so it is too small for this list, which only covers 50 cities over 50,000 population.

I think Rah has finally settled this debate.

I agree, because a ghetto is not a CITY but a neighborhood OF a city.

I know East Palo Alto has one, I know East LA, West and East Oakland have pockets, South Central/Compton, Carson/Wilmington, Stockton, Richmond, SF (Bayview/Tenderloin), Fresno, Sam Jose, Salinas, Marin City, Santa Rosa, Monterey (the entire base Fort Ord was pretty ghetto).

A ghetto would be a neighborhood.

So, is there really any possible way to rank every neighborhood in the state of California.

Let alone, to say Oakland has the worst.

What does crime has to do with a ghetto.

A defintion of ghetto is - A section of a city occupied by a minority group who live there especially because of social, economic, or legal pressure.

To say the City of Oakland is a ghetto, is just nonsense.

Or any city at all.

People would be more inclined to believe you if (1) you rank neighborhoods by the term ghetto.

If you want to get really technical, then ghetto would only refer to a neighborhood were Jews were forcibly moved to. Being a Jew myself, I have deceased relatives who were in the true ghettos.

People here are using the colloquial definition of ghetto, aka "Crappy urban place to live."

But if we use the modern traditional definition, Oakland still qualifies.

Oakland has one of the lowest median household incomes in the state, and also one of the highest median home prices creating the expanse in housing, schools, and crime between the Hills (rich people), and flats (poor people). If that's not social, and economic pressure, which has effectively destroyed any middle class that might have existed in Oakland, then I don't know what is.

Quote:
Median Household Income:
Oakland: $48,699
California: $61,021

Oakland Estimated per capita income in 2008: $30,372

Estimated median house or condo value in 2008: $541,900 (it was $227,300 in 2000)
Oakland: $541,900
California: $467,000
