Serious thread please don't lock as I am genuinely curious. I'm not going to post any funny pics of Meg Whitman or youtube videos of Oakland.

But seriously I see A LOT of people in the CA forum complain about how liberal California and how a liberal politicians are ruining California. It also seems most here support conservative doctorines like low taxes, low social services, anti-government workers, anti-immigration and so forth. Basically the type of rhetoric you'd hear out of someone from the deep south. Lucky I have not seen any kind of religious zealots posting in the CA forum (yet).

So the question is, why are you here? California a the liberal/progressive stronghold and has been for decades. This is nothing new. If you don't like liberal policies, why did you come here in the first place? Why aren't you packing your bags and heading to the deep south?

It just seems silly to me. I would never, ever, move to the deep south even if you paid me a substantial amount of money. And even if I did move there, I definitely would not complain about how conservative the place is as I would know exactly what I was getting into before moving there.

Because they will just bring up the way it used to be, they tend to love to wallow in the past i.e. 1950's when things were "great" if you were a white male of course. They hold on that things will go back the way it used to be, no more illegals, no more progressive libs, and you could be happily middle class. They don't want to accept those days are long gone. They'd rather stay here and complain.

Um, I was born here... As a freshly born baby I didn't have any choice in where my momma plopped me out.

Things haven't been that bad until the last dozen, 15 or 20 years, and I was busy working my career, making enough money to pay the high taxes.

Now I'm not making the big bucks and I'm planning on moving soon. I have to fix a couple final things before I put my house on the market, then I'll move out of state and I'll quit complaining about California because whatever they do with the state won't affect me.

As repetitively stated: I am neither liberal nor conservative ... prefer common-sense on an individual issue basis. That said, I have developed a theory out of my recent posts regarding why the apparent imbalance favoring conservatism expressed on this Forum.

I have never been much of a 'Conspiracy Theorist', though I have witnessed some conspiracies first hand in Washington State -- where the goal is to scare as many people away from considering moving to that state as possible (weather, hating Californians, etc.). And this, I believe, now, is a cousin-reason for the angry, vituperative, conservative protestations that dominate discussions on this Forum:

!CONSPIRACY!

The Conservatives want to scare away any liberals who happen onto these pages in search of information to support any liberal interest in moving to the "Left-Coast"! California conservatives know full well they are in the minority of their state, but they don't want to appear thus, so they hope liberals take their shouts as evidence that the voting history and polls which historically, and repetitively, cast California as liberal are simply wrong. Simultaneously, the conservative posters know they are encouraging like-minded folks from elsewhere to join the right-citizen-guard. Thus your question/suggestion of why they don't move to Kentucky is pointless: this is a take-over bid! Conservatives will not give an inch!

Well played conservatives! Forewarned is forearmed liberals! Let the battles continue! The enemies are defined!

While the state of California is as socialist as you can get in the U.S., it's still a democracy, not a dictatorship.

I don't identify as liberal or conservative, but I think the question posed in this thread's title is ridiculous. Politics certainly wouldn't be my #1 priority in deciding where to live, in fact it wouldn't even make my top 10, and I doubt it's the deciding factor for most people either.

Also, one thing from your post that needs to be pointed out -- people, liberal or conservative, overwhelmingly are NOT anti-immigration. They're anti ILLEGAL-immigration, it's a difference many people don't seem to understand, and AFAIK that's not a liberal/conservative issue.

This being said, CA isn't even 100% liberal or anywhere near that. Perhaps somewhere like, oh, SF may be too extreme for a die-hard Republican who cares too much about politics, but there's plenty of other CA cities or towns that would do them just fine.

Can you explain what makes CA anymore "socialist" than any other state in the US?

This is a silly thread. It is obvious that many people would like to live in California and take advantage of its geography, weather, etc. They may want to work for Google or Apple. Maybe they have family there.

And of course it is true that millions of people already in California are not liberals or progressives. That has always been true, hasn't it?

But they might not like where the state is headed. So they express their views and advocate change. How can you be against that? Or are you just showing that many in California aren't as "open" as they like to believe they are? Maybe they love their home and don't like what has happened the last twenty years and want it to be more like what they grew up with.

California is pretty well split when it comes to conservative/liberal stuff but not always in the same way as other states like Kentucky. Socially liberal is how most people define themselves but that doesn't mean they are fiscally liberal, the two do no go hand in hand. That's probably why many prefer CA to "conservative" states where "conservative" could mean something entirely different. Besides, if you have a good job and lifestyle in CA it doesn't matter where you fall politically, you will want to stay.
