Quincy has a hospital and is the county seat of Plumas County (great county fairs in the summer). Not too far to drive to bigger cities such as Chico or Reno.

We lived in Paradise, CA for 15 years. The hospital there is one of the best. Feather River hospital, run by the Adventist Church. My friend works there and has nothing but good things to say. The town was perfect for raising our 3 children in, the high school is decent as are the elementary schools. Plenty of shopping in Paradise but if you need the big box stores, they are a short drive down the hill to Chico where Chico State is.

Be sure to check into Quincy on Highway 70 in Plumas County. It's a wonderful little mountain town, not too far from Oroville and Chico down in the valley, and to the east just a few minutes away is Portola and the Sierra Valley. From Portola you can get to Reno in about 45 minutes. I love Portola too. It's higher in elevation. But Quincy has a community college and a very nice downtown.

Thumbs up Go To Springville

There are also small communities up there that aren't towns but are secluded places to live. You could even go a bit higher than Springville and still be close to it and the largest town from it-which is Porterville, not sure how far away that is but just guessing,I'd say about 25 miles or so. Porterville has Walmart, chain grocery stores and just about everything you'd need for supplies and such. If you didn't mind the commute,Porterville does have places related to the medical field. Springville may not exactly what you are looking for,but it is defianetly worth researching. Hope this info helps some.

unfortunantly me and my kids had to move and now my eldest is entering highschool THEY SAY it was the best school thay have been to since then
they have been to three schools

My good friend lives in Mid Pines, near Yosemite. She loves it there. I've visited once a long time ago and it was very beautiful.

If you are considering Plumas county here are a few stats for you...There are more CHP ( clearly hostile & Pathetic ) officers per capita there than any place in Calif and they love to harass you. If you live near Portola you can count on the CDFG dumping poison into your drinking water every 5 or 6 years. I have pictures of Cancerous fish out of lake Davis for anyone interested.
Portola was a great place to live in the 50' 60' and early 70's then the Sourthern Calif mentality moved in along with the Gustpo ( CHP ) and the whole county went to hell.
I suggest another state.

Definetly, Auburn. Although it's not exactly in the mountains (the foothills od sacramento) it's a lot cooler than sacramento and retains it's old town charm. And, there is a medium sized hospital there and two very large medical centers in Roseville. Auburn is Great! It can even get snow (but very rarely)

There are plenty of fine small towns with medical. Truckee of course, one of the finest orthopedic facilities in the world (skiing). Loyalton is a quiet small town with a clinic. Portola is not so great, not for the reason mentioned above, but more for what Gertrude Stein said about Oakland, there is no there there. Graeagle is nice, but a commute to work. Quincy, Greenville, Lake Almanor, Chester. If it is real mountains you want, Mammoth and Bishop work well, but as is my new mantra, everyplace is second place to Elko Nevada.

Here is my take on Tahoe. My family has been going to Tahoe since the 1920's, Grandfather never bought a land or a house . I have lived at the Lake and in Truckee since the mid 1970's.
It is profoundly beautiful. South Shore is an eastern extension of San Jose, it is a large town, mostly flat as a board filled with homes that are not particularly attractive. The Stateline Casino area looks like an urban area, big buildings, not built on a people in the mountains scale but more on a Vegas in the mountains scale.

The North Shore is much nicer. Mostly residential with a three business areas, Incline Village, Kings Beach and Tahoe City. Kings Beach is rundown and the back streets are where the service workers live.

Tahoe City and the west shore are jewels, a true small town feeling.

Traffic in the summer is horrendous throughout the basin and is a prime reason I would not live in the basin.

We own several sailboats which we use on the lake, but the affordability of launching, slips, and moorings is pretty tough and is getting worse. A mooring on the lake runs about $1800.00 for a 90 day season.

If you ski, boat, hike, mtn bike, horse, get there, you will love it.

All that said, I settled on Truckee years ago, it was much more affordable, that has changed, but it is still a great family town where much of the community comes out for the high school football games. It is a town where children who do not do sports, rock climb, camp, mtn bike, ski, hang out at the docks on Donner Lake are the uncool ones. There is also an excellent skate park for skaters.

Girls who are athletes are the popular girls, kids who smoke are considered to be dorks.

Tahoe Forest Hospital is very good. Truckee and the Lake get excellent Doctors who moved here for the outdoor activities. One of the best orthopods in the nation is in Truckee, sadly, he just lost his boy in Iraq.

And yes, Barton in South Shore is also excellent for the same reasons.

A final note, there is a perception that people at Tahoe are glamorous, but the truth is they are mostly just plain folks like everywhere else. People you can depend on and be friends with, the glamorous people are weekenders.

Here is the link for the Northshore Truckee paper, you can also get the south shore paper from the links at the bottom; Sierra Sun - Serving North Lake Tahoe and the greater Truckee area
