That's a big problem for California. Can anything be done about it?

Way too passive a position to take considering the upcoming mushroom cloud of California's $500B pension shortfall.

Study done by no less than Stanford.

A slowing improving job market doesn't fix this. Nor does the recent concessions some of California's public workers union agree to.

This has nothing to do with the topic of this thread which is jobs, but is instead another article posted here to make us scared of our shadow.

Furthermore, in reality, California is in a MUCH better position defecitwise than the Federal Govt is:

The National Debt has continued to increase an average of $4.15 billion per day since September 28, 2007!
U.S. National Debt Clock

How's that for a reality check?

I'm amazed that gloating out-of-staters have time to worry about California, If I were you, Id be on the phone with my congressman.

The Federal deficit is a huge problem and I am very concerned. Hopefully Congress and the President take it seriously and do something about it.

BTW - Unfunded pensions absolutely have impact on jobs. Any municipal body has to find a way to pay for them. So they can take money from other places, raise taxes, or try to negotiate a change in pension benefits. Any change to future pensioners will affect those looking for public jobs now. Pension reform, such as preventing double dipping, might make more jobs available to unretired workers.

In reality, the overwhelming number of jobs here are created and lost in California, they arent created and then moved elsewhere to any degree big enough to matter.

The Public Policy Institute took a look at the data and concluded that all this talk of companies leaving to find cheaper states to do business in actuality was widely overblown.

The study looks at the years of 1992 through 2004 and shows that California has not had a mass exodus of businesses. Most of the business relocations have occurred within California, usually to an adjacent county where land prices are cheaper.

There is the usual ebb and flow of businesses in and out of California but are replaced by new businesses that move into California or start here.

In the words of the study:

"[T]he small number of California jobs moving to other states due to business relocation is relatively inconsequential—about 11,000 jobs per year out of more than 18 million (.06 percent). Business births, deaths, contractions, and expansions have a much greater effect on employment."

Claim of California Jobs Moving Out of State Shown by Study to be a Myth - California Progress Report

Furthermore,
Californians continue to create far more new businesses than the total of businesses that leave the state-by a VERY WIDE MARGIN at that.

Furthermore, I find it totally ironic that somebody who brings up the MYTH that California jobs are moving en masse to TX but doesnt also bring up OUTSOURCING to India, China etc.

Oh yeah, I forgot, you guys dont mind that.
I think the point should be that if you are in California and are unemployed and you want a job then you might look at other states as well as California for a job.

Your article is 3 years old and most recent data is 6 years old. How about something more recent. Here's something to take a look at, the majority of companies are going to other states not abroad.

California Companies Moving Away or
Shifting Work Out Reaches New Record: 158
(for 2010 alone)

In short:
Total for 9-1/2 months of 2010: 158
Total for all of 2009: 51

Vetrazzo, a "green" company that turns recycled glass into countertops, has been sold to Polycor, which moved the operation from Richmond, Calif., to Georgia.

Haynes Corp., a precision parts manufacturer, is closing some operations in Norwalk, Calif. and moving jobs to a building near the Naples Municipal Airport in Florida.

International Rectifier Corp., an El Segundo-based business that has been in California for many years and is based in El Segundo, plans to open a R&D facility in Chandler, Arizona

Awesome Products Inc., based in Buena Park, Calif., plans to spend $40 million to expand operations in Arkansas.

Beckman Coulter, HQ'd in Brea, Calif, is investing $18.2 million and will create up to 95 jobs in a new facility in Indianapolis.

Fasst Company, which makes dirt bike parts, moved from Long Beach to Washington, Utah, in August.

SMA America LLC, a "green" company based in Rocklin, Calif. that makes parts for solar-power systems, has hired nearly 200 people for its new $20 million Denver, Colorado manufacturing plant.

Enfinity Corp., a Belgium-based "green" solar development company, relocated its Americas headquarters from Sacramento to Sandy Springs, Georgia,

Wells Fargo will relocate 101 student loan jobs from Rancho Cordova to Phoenix, Arizona, and Sioux Falls, South Dakota and will give California employees the option to move to those locations.

Power-One, a "green" manufacturer based in Camarillo, Calif., is opening a new plant in Phoenix to manufacture solar power equipment.

Boeing will transfer about 550 jobs from Long Beach to facilities in Oklahoma City starting in early 2011

Mercury Paper Inc. moved its North American HQ from Santa Fe Springs to co-locate it with an expanding paper-products plant in Strasburg, Virginia.

That's just a few examples. I guess these are all right wing lies too, right ??

Yes, yes we know....the studies show that annually jobs leaving to other states amounts to about 11,000 a year, and thats about 110,000 ever decade.

California creates far more jobs than that in a normal year.
