Default In-state tuition for illegal immigrants

In-state tuition for illegal immigrants is preserved with California Supreme Court ruling [Updated] | L.A. NOW | Los Angeles Times

is anyone else torn on this? i understand that it is not fair to kids from other states who are american citizens, but i don't think it is all bad either. illegal immigrants tend to be extremely poor, so giving the youth an opportunity to educate themselves and pull themselves out of the depths of poverty seems to be a pretty good idea. since the illegals aren't going anywhere anyways (due to their large numbers), we might as well give them a path out of crime and poverty. it costs us nothing if an immigrant chooses not to take advantage of this offer anyways. having said that, the subsidies to in-state students are pretty large and this would cost the state a lot of money. i would just hope that this would be an investment that would pay off in the long run.

FWIW, i am not a bleeding-heart liberal. i am looking at this strictly from an economic point of view, although there is a social impact as well. i'd much rather give a man a rod to catch his own fish.

Seems to me like it will make California an even bigger target for illegals. Seems really unfair to me and I think any illegal alien who tries to register for college should be reported, detained and deported.

They are criminals.

It is in the interest of the state to educate as many people has possible, whatever is spent to educate will come back to the state in increased taxes years later.

I went to four years of university on the GI bill, 270 a month, because our schools were so inexpensive. California certainly got its moneys worth out of me.

Same goes with illegals, why not educate them, give them the chance to be productive taxpayers instead of gang bangers.

They are not going back to Mexico, no way is the American government going to expel 12 million people. We no longer have enough cattle cars.

Might as well suck it up and make good taxpayers out of 'em.

Makes perfect sense. But then again, common sense is most definitely lacking in California.

They still wouldn't be allowed to stay here with their degrees and I doubt they will bail out to where they came from with the degree for their old country.

Do we need a BA degree for illegals mowing the lawn or selling you a snow cone?
We are gifting the illegal over 4 years with a probably 30 thousand dollars in tuition benefits.
As it is I can't stand the 15k a year per gem in this state we pay for most to NOT graduate.

And a parent living in Washington state wanting to send their legal kid to a CA college has to pay out-of-state tuition while an illegal gets in-state tuition.

Something here doesn't make sense. I just can't put my finger on it. I'll have to go give it some more thought.

Yes, those poor, oppressed, criminals.

And California wonders why it's broke. Yes, adopt a policy of REWARDING people for breaking the law. Because they need a "leg up".

You guys have zero money management skills.

I'm not torn at all. No special privileges for offspring off illegals.

We uped the bet on not making sense by electing Jerry Brown as well. Stay tuned and watch the circus that will unfold. It's going to get good. :-)

The not so liberal side is coming out in me now. In short, we absolutely should not be providing for them. I'm a citizen. I want to go back to school right now but can't afford it. I did everything the right way; I worked hard for a long time at a job that gave me little else than a paycheck and medical benefits (which I had to make small payments to have). I've paid my taxes but I get nothing for free and don't expect to.

So no, I don't agree with this court ruling.
