Unaffordable Affordable Housing (real estate, condo, house)

Okay, I have read lots and lots of these posts. I can't believe people are still asking about affordable housing in California. I went down to OC/SD last week to see our friends who moved there, near the beach. I came away saying there wasn't a snow ball's chance in Hell of me moving there without another 3 million. Why is that so difficult to do? Why a person would want to live somewhere as a bottom feeder is beyond me, when they have a chance to live somewhere else better.

Is it the phenomenal human capacity for adapting by way of denial the reason why so many people here are looking for Affordable Housing in California?

Well, I think the problem I see is that what many people consider "affordable" are really looking at what would be considered public housing in any expensive coastal city. People with no exposure to expensive markets (CA, WDC, NYC, Boston, etc) have no real concept of what housing prices look like in those markets. They are basing their question on their own experience of "affordable". What they don't realize is that while 500k gets you a mansion in say, Ohio, it gets you a tiny starter home in what might be a rough area of CA.

Basically if people are unwilling to persuse real estate listings or do research on their own, they are going to keep coming on the forum looking for a 2000sf 3/2 by the beach for 250k. It certainly says something to the desirability of the area that so many people repeatedly seem to ask the question.

Yes, I agree, humans have an amazing capacity to keep dreaming of living their dream. But I think it's time to change the dream when reality hits you in the face like a pie. Unless, of course, you are the Man of La Mancha. Is there a LaMancha in California???

you can get a 2 bed room condo in carlsbad for 300K big deal. buy one!

I have no idea if there is a LaMancha in California, but I certainly believe that REALITY is what you make it. For people that were stuck in POW camps, concentration camps, many hung on and survived because they still had hope, faith, and dreams to cling to; if they had faced their "reality", they would not have survived. To dream is to live. A man/woman without a dream is not really living. No, I'm not the Man of LaMancha; I'm just myself and there are plenty more like me who have a dream.

I guess I'm just one of those people who believes that changing the dream to better fit the reality rather than the other way around gives me more of a chance to actually realize the dream.

LDDiamondGirl, you have given me two good laughs in one thread, so thank you! I agree with what you're saying. Dreaming is great, but sometimes, it needs a little nudge-- or even a big shove-- in a realistic direction. Buying coastal property, hill property or canyon property in SoCal without making big bucks, having a trust fund, winning the lottery or being a skilled embezzler is last millennium's dream.

Dreamin' ain't gettin'.

So I really can buy a nice house in a nice neighborhood in coastal California for $200k? Good to know.
