You can't enclose the decks in Mammoth because when it snows, you need a way to shovel and "shove" the snow off the deck. Enclosed decks are not the norm here in CA, I've hardly ever seen them. We don't have mosquitos, so it would be a waste.

Steve Searles is a great guy! I have met him many times and he's a very sweet gentleman!

I'll try and remember everyone in your area in the winter time and I won't complain when we get 6 - 10 inches of snow in Michigan. Regarding the decks I meant underneath the deck. On the tv show they showed this bear was sleeping under the deck where it was nice and warm and I just wondered why they weren't required to put lattice down there so animals like bears, or any other animals couldn't access it?? Also.....any suggestions on RV parks in the area......

People should enclose the underside of the deck solid not lattice. A common way to lose a home in the west to wild fire is from an unenclosed deck, a brand or ember gets blown into that space, gets trapped and lights the house. Not providing habitat for bears is a plus.

Highnlite:

I never even considered fire in your area.......I learned something new tonight. So there are numerous reasons to enclose the underside of your deck. It just seems like it would help everyone including the bears by requiring that. Also, it seems like the city should be required to put some type of gate to not allow access in culverts by the bears...

It's so interesting to read about different areas of the country I can't wait to visit........

Thanks for that. Another good reason for an enclosed under deck is that it gives you a place to store your summer toys in winter and your winter toys in summer.

The problem with a gate on a culvert is rain, thunderstorms, flashfloods, and spring runoff can pile debris up against the gate, blocking the flow and taking out the road.

Culverts are a problem. We had a dog get stuck in a culvert for 5 days. We were sailing in Mexico and had a ranch sitter back home taking care of things. My daughter starts getting anxious, telling us something was wrong with her dog back home (we were in our sailboat in the middle of the Sea of Cortez). We put into a small port, find the internet cafe (very common in Mexico) and check our emails. Our ranch sitter said that Clover had gone missing.. My wife, knowing the habits of our dog emailed him to check culverts, and yep, he found her down the road wedged into a culvert. Our neighbors in our rural valley saw him with a jack, and came to help, boards and jacks, they cranked the end of the somewhat crunched culvert open and hauled her out. She had survived by drinking the the trickle of water that flowed through...

Happens to bears too... culverts can be an attractive place for a nap.
