My actual experience living in an RV in the San Francisco area as compared to Charles' assessment.

Pros: You are spending less than the average homeowner in San Diego. True
Cons: You will stay single. Wrong, I dated all the time and had a serious girlfriend at the time I left. Most women thought it was a wise choice and appreciated I was taking care of my child support obligations at the time.
Cons: The guy in the park sleeping on the bench spent around $115,000 less than you did and he gets free meals at the mission. Um, Ok, I don't really care and didn't mind paying for my food. Not sure how this is relevant.
Cons: An RV depreciates at about the same rate real estate appreciates. I have owned (still have it) my RV for 14 years and am not too worried about depreciation at this point.
Cons: RV loans do not have a mortgage interest deduction. They do on federal taxes which I've taken every year since buying it. This is misinformation. Check with your tax professional.
Cons: At $3.50/gallon, relocating from San Diego to Malibu is roughly the equivalent of one average mortgage payment. Obviously, this varies according to where you live, but was not a factor for me living full-time in my RV. One month...ok, what about the other 11 months? Please...
Cons: When someone investigating you for a security clearance.... I work for the federal government. It's a non-issue, and I had a permanent address in whatever RV park I lived in.
Pros: You don't have to worry about gophers. Um,OK.
I loved living in my RV full-time. I would suggest an RV park, however. Trying to live in the streets for free is a bad idea. I was paying $720 a month for a full hookup site with utilities included in San Leandro. Considering the average one bedroom is around $2,000 a month in San Francisco, it doesn't take a genius to figure out I saved a lot of money during my two years there.

The key is finding the right rv park. One that doesn't have tweakers and toothless types ready to take anything not bolted down.

I lived full time in various parks in my motorhome for almost four years, and I never had a problem. I never worried about the residents of the park, because for the most part they looked out for each other. Neighbors in nearby Section 8 housing were more troublesome.

We've had problems in mixed use parks. Those the live there seem ok but it's the transient types. We were in a really steep slot once and used a bottle jack to level the trailer. While we were fishing someone put a 2 x 4 where the jack was and stole it. Lot's of petty stuff.
