I love Cuesta Grade! Always have. After getting off work at Sierra Vista we would always head up and over to the old Santa Margarita Saloon for a few cold ones. [if we didnt head to the hot tubs at Avila] I always enjoyed the view from the top when heading south to SLO. You couldnt even tell there was a city down there. Or taking the old gravel road down the grade. Hoping you didnt meet up with people on bikes. But what I remember the most is it would be 75 degrees in SLO and as soon as you topped the grade, BAM! 90 degrees in Santa Margarita! The only time I didnt like the Grade was when it was foggy. I sure do miss the Central Coast!

When you drive it twice a day, you tend to forget how beautiful the drive really is.

Man...every single time I drive through there, I always get sort of nauseous or sleepy. I don't know why, considering I drive through roads that have even steeper gradients, but there is something about that area in particular that makes me want to sleep or throw up.

Even watching the video makes me want to sleep or throw up. And I LOVE the Central Coast. Who knows, eh?

That's where the nasty accidents happen. Also, say goodbye to your gas mileage for a mile or two. And don't even try taking a VW Bus up it.. hehe.

Ok, making me really homesick now! While in college at Poly in the 80's I worked as a bill collector for a SLO furniture store (LOL, the things we do for money when in college!!) Almost every afternoon I'd make my "rounds" collection starting up the Cuesta grade driving up to Atascadero and Paso Robles, then down either 41 or 46 to Morro Bay. Looking back, I was seriously living life on a post card!

Default Questa Grade

If you want to do it right, go out of Arroyo Grande on the dirt. Then you can really talk some smack. It gets even better.

BTW, does anyone think that the 101 into SLO needs to be expanded to a 3 lane soon? SLO just hit 45,000 population and the county is at 270,000 population with more people living in North and South County. At least I think the 1 from SLO to Morro Bay near Cuesta could be a three lane.

Not really. I hardly ever experience traffic congestion and I take the grade twice a day.

I take classes at Cuesta on and off so I was driving there from both North County and South County and even during the busiest times it wasn't too bad.

Hmm because it's on the busy hours I think sometimes it could be a three way. I find it bad on the 101 during rush hour and when people get off work and go to work it's the worse.
