I'd have to say Mendocino/Ukiah, Arcata (Humboldt County), Lake Tahoe, or Morro Bay... lots of others, I'm sure, but these are my picks!

Consider these alternatives:
Box Canyon above Chatsworth.
Topanga between Woodland Hills and the beach.
La Tuna Canyon Road between Sunland and the 210
Meiners Oaks and Oak View (near Ojai)
Anywhere along the Rincon between Ventura and Santa Barbara.

You won't be a weird artist in California. You'll just be one of the throng.
I've lived in California all my life, been an artist all my life, and even the most mainstream, conservative parts of California have a pocket niche for weird artists.
It depends what kind of weird artist you are.. do you want an urban setting or a more crunchy/natural setting?

I have lived in both Arcata and Mendocino, both are wonderful places for artists!

How funny. My husband is from Venice and I lived in Meiners Oaks and Ojai plus along the Rincon between Ventura and Santa Barbara. I have been to the other obscure locations mentioned in this list many times in my life. I find this funny because I am so not artistically inclined in anyway yet I always seem to be living in some cool places with cool people. I think the list below is pretty right on. I also like Sebastopol near Santa Rosa. I think there are lots of unique, funky places to live as an artist in Northern CA. But, as someone else mentioned I think you can find the artsy people anywhere in CA without looking too hard. Good luck! Oh, and you probably won't be considered "weird" living in any of these places!

You would fit in anywhere in Santa Cruz as a weird artist. Check out Soquel, Capitola, Aptos, and Santa Cruz county. I love love love that area.
