Tap, tap. No time to find the laser dot. That's JMHMO. YMMV. (Message me if anybody wants a glossary of Internet abbrev's.)

Meanwhile $99 guns serve the needs of most of the world.
I have Crimson Trace on one pistol but in a scenerio such as you describe it's mostly a point-shoot time. However, at enough distance, a laser spot can be more unsettling to the other person and may help you avoid having to use deadly force.

My father collected guns and he and I showed them. Saturday night specials were not, nor are they, an option! Thankfully, with proper care they can also be a good investment for the long term.

One point I'm a bit confused on is #4 regarding legal open carry of an unloaded firearm in a vehicle, is it equivalent to open carry on a person with the magazine also available? In other words unloaded weapon on passenger seat plus magazine (with ammo) also on the passenger seat? That is the part that troubles me.

I fully agree with you about the inadvisability of openly carrying any firearm in a vehicle even though openly carrying an unloaded firearm is evidently legal. That's why mine is in the trunk when I transport it. As far as I know there is no reason why LEO should know or care that I have an unloaded firearm in my trunk. I surely don't want to become the next statistic to appear on the TV news programs, another officer involved shooting.

I like to play it safe and with risks this high I'm extra cautious. It's a known fact that law enforcement officers carry loaded weapons, and it's possible for a civilian to be fully in the right and fully dead at the same time. I carry any firearms in the trunk. On the rare occasion that I may be pulled over for a traffic violation (very rare, hasn't happened for years) I pull over as quickly as possible, I open the drivers window before stopping, and as soon as I place my car in park and turn off the ignition I put my hands on the top center of the steering wheel and wait for the officer to approach me and assess the situation before I move my hands. I don't like making people with loaded weapons feel jumpy!
You're welcome!

Re your question about carrying ammo in proximity to the weapon, yes, as long as the gun is not loaded, and not concealed, it is legal. A loaded clip next to a gun is not a loaded gun. They can be on the car seat side-by-side, or openly carried on your belt, and there is no violation.

But, once again, not recommended!

I carry a bit more. A .357 magnum depending upon where in the wild I'm ambling. Elsewhere, nada. No fear involved so save your phony, gratuitous tears. Sometimes a penny of caution is worth a pound of cure. Of course, if I gave you a penny for your thoughts I'd probably get change!
Gee, why don't you carry a lightning rod too, you can rig a back pack, stick the rod in the top and trail a braided copper wire, since your chance of getting hit by lightning is far greater than getting attacked by a wild animal.

Gee, why not wear a beekeeper suit while out in the hills (not that you can get very far out in Missouri) The chances of getting killed by bees is far greater than getting attacked by a wild animal.

So of course, you StP'ed again, but, send us a photo will ya, hiking (you ever hike) with your combo beekeeper lightning rod suit on.

This is an instruction I gave my kids once they began driving.

Nah! Don't need a lightening rod. It conjures up images of the lightening bolt that struck the ground about 30 feet in front of me last year. Knocked me back about 20 feet. That was close enough, thank you. But worse, much worse, there's also the image of the rod I suspect is firmly implanted between your gluteous maximae.

Now if beekeepers regalia would keep pests like you away I might consider it. As for hiking. Infantrymen hike. I hike. Next?

Ah! Nullgeo's turn!

Thanks. It's nice to know that even though we are diametrically opposed on most issues we can still sometimes find common ground.

You can add me to the list. Practice it and also taught it to my children.

I felt a conjuration in the ethers, so checked CD ... voila! Chief Mugwhumps has requested my input! re: guns?
I lost all interest in guns after 1967 ... don't mind 'em ... accept their reality ... sons all live to hunt, although I steered them toward bowhunting which seems to be their growing passion these days.

You know, I grew up in Detroit, Philadelphia, and Washington D.C., then lived in St. Paul (MN), San Francisco, all before Seattle -- and later even Honolulu. Lived in the Maine woods, too, as a teen. Spent parts of about five summers on dairy farms in northern PA and camped and hiked in 47 states growing up with my family. Did some hunting as a boy, as well.

Never once felt the need to be armed.
Smallest weapon I used in the service was a 20mm cannon .. no good for hunting ... ruins the meat every time

Now back to chores ... will respond to other humorous accusations another time

But you need that 20MM cannon because the government is evil and we can't have them taking control of us. Never-mind that even if we all had assault weapons the "government" could still wipe us all out if they had to. We will never be able to keep up in a battle against the government. Isn't that where all the paranoia comes from? Government control of our lives so we must be armed.

Nah, I don't have/need no stinkin' 20mm cannon ... I was referring back to my tour in Vietnam in '67 ... aircraft mounted ... but, yeah, the government is evil ... all governments are evil and always have been ... anything over about 150 people operating in a primitive band, hunting and gathering is evil.

Bout a couple years after I returned from overseas, my wife and I were on the porch of a friend's house in Wash. D.C. one evening when a car slammed on its brakes and a woman jumped out of the passenger side, hollering -- followed by a man out the driver's door ... as he headed around toward her, she reached in her purse and took out a pistol and shot him three times -- in the heart region of his chest ... he collapsed, of course, and then she dropped her gun, ran to him, cradled him in her arms and wailed, "I'm sorry! I'm sorry! Don't die! I love you! I love you! I didn't mean it!" ... etc. one of the sadder things I have witnessed in life. They were married, I read in the papers ... had kids ... they'd gotten into an argument in the car ... that's what happens.

I have no use for guns ... with limited use of one arm I can't hunt with a bow, so kids gave me a crossbow ... which, I must admit, is kinda fun ... less likely to go off by accident, too, or in the heat of the moment
