The "traditional" Macy's like the one in San Francisco, New York City, and Chicago are premium stores.

For towns with good Macy's stores look at Santa Monica and Santa Barbara.

Why do you think they want to close the Santa Maria store? It's not working. One in SLO would work better.
In all my years living (and going to school) in the SLO area I have never once heard ANYONE say they wanted a Macy's here. Ever. Not once.

Coincidence? Did you ever ask people? It's not something people just talk about from day to day talk. Macy's came up when Gottschalk's was leaving because it brought up the conversation. In all truth, I would rather see Gottschalk's come back versus us keeping Forever 21.

Most of the people I'm around hate how SLO is becoming like Santa Barbara...they want SLO to stay small and want the chain stores to stop being built.

And yes, around the dinner table or when we're out hiking me and my friends absolutely talk about things like that. Many of my friends have moved away because of what SLO is becoming, which is quite sad.

SLO and Santa Barbara alike? I think not good sir.

Santa Barbara is a college town and a tourist town with many upper class people.

SLO is a college town with many middle class people.

We have Target, Costco, Home Depot, Sears, Kohl's. Santa Barbara has Nordstrom's, Sak's, Coach, etc...

How do you see the similarities?

Santa Barbara has 90,000 population. SLO has 50,000 population (which includes the dorm population).

I think SLO and Santa Barbara are nothing alike other than SLO is what Santa Barbara used to be.

I like this area because I grew up here and even if it changes I will still like it.

I'm not a sir.

Maybe you don't see how they're alike because the only criteria you judge places on is population and how many big box/chain stores they have...

I love this area, but it's slowly turning into something I don't like.

So then how are they alike? The people here are even different than in Santa Barbara. We are still more conservative here and we don't have the Latino run-down neighborhoods, and not to mention we don't have the traffic!

I will admit that the downtowns are beginning to look similar. Less small businesses and more national chains.

BTW, what is the Chinatown project supposed to be? A lifestyle center/mix-used center in a downtown setting?

Amusing, all those chains stores sell the very same crap, made in the very same Chinese factories, How can anyone say that Macy's is better than Forever 21, or Kohls etc, it is all the same stuff, same fabrics, same thread, same seamstress or seamster, it is all shipped over here in the same containers.

Well I could say Macy's runs it's place with some organization, class, and has it's own name brand and it's "traditional" American department store. But I have a feeling you will argue that.

Honestly, for SLO I would like to see no development in downtown and more work on affordable housing. I'd like to see an increase in student enrollment at Cal Poly SLO, so that local students are able to get more help getting in. I would also like to see a stop to big-box centers and no Dalidio Ranch Marketplace. And of course, I want to see a Macy's instead of Forever 21. Macy's is a traditional department store, the very first high end department store, it cators to the businessman and businesswomen and then to the whole family, and it's a relic of the 1960's suburban family lifestyle.

That Forever 21 store and that whole shopping center was the first shopping center in this county! It was the Central Coast Mall, and that department store is all that's left and now it's not even used for a department store.
