It's a combination of envy and ignorance. Envy because California is a rich & successful state with a very high standard of livng and, deep down, most of the haters know they would rather live here but probably couldn't make it to save their lives. Ignorance because 90% of them have never even been to California and instead react only to the caricature of it painted by right wing propaganda outlets like Fox.

I agree with your conclusions though, people don't hate california, they hate their missinformed IDEA of California.
