We don't go out to eat as much and we don't shop as much," said Floyd Jimmerson, of Tracy, who was at a small retail center across the street from a Shell station at Market and Seventh streets in Oakland. On Wednesday morning, that station had the distinction of being in a tie for the highest price in the Bay Area for regular gas, at $3.85 a gallon. "We do less driving."

Unless the trend in world events turns back I fully believe the gloomy predictions of $5 gas by summer, and an attendant increase in many if not most prices and a further decline in the economy. That includes further erosion in the housing market.

Three days ago I filled up here and went into culture shock at having to pay over $3.00 for each gallon - $3.04 in fact. That was a first.

This is going to really hurt CA and the people who have no alternative to driving to work. Of course, it's not helping anywhere. I feel for those for whom this will be a huge burden. So begins the vicious cycle of "no money no gas - no gas no transportation - no transportation no job - no job no money."

That's crazy. In my area, prices are still hovering in the 3.50-ish range but this is higher from the 3.40 range it was a month ago. My mom who's in Oakland was saying how she never goes anywhere anymore due to the high cost of gas. Didn't know it was already that high in Oakland.

Curmudgeon get ready, your prices are going to skyrocket as well. That cycle is going to start up all over again just when we saw a glimmer of hope for the economy.

I haven't seen under $3 gas since November. Fortunately no job = no need to commute = not much need for gas = gas price increases not really much of a deal to me compared to others. I just hope my house sells before gas prices affect the economy and depress the housing market further.

That gas station mentioned in the article is notorious for being way more(Like 20-30 cents more) than all the gas stations nearby. Its ridiculous.

The Valero on 22nd and E 12th is another outrageously expensive gas station.

Otherwise, we're in the 3.50 range too.

Ok that's more like it. Usually SD and the east bay are just about equal in prices of gas and most anything else. Down the street from me there's a unical, a shell and a 7-11 all at one intersection. Oddly the 7-11 is the most expensive

High gas -> more people on public transit -> more money for public transit -> better public transit.

Unfortunately, those are going to be some pretty painful transitions for a lot of people.

They're probably hoping people stopping in for a sugar, salt, beer or tobacco fix will be too lazy to cross the street for a couple cents a gallon. It probably works.

My most recent was about 4 days ago at about $3.46. I haven't been out much the last few days but I'll be surprised if even the lowest here (Arco) isn't over $3.50.
