I recently found $291 that belonged to me on the website and submitted the info that they requested. If anyone has actually gone through the full process, what was it like? Quick? did they ask for more info than you gave to prove that it is you?

Yes..I just showed proof (like in my case my old driver's license and possibly my old rental lease agreement) and then they mailed me a check. It took about 6-10 weeks if I remember correctly. They didn't ask for further information or anything unusual that I couldn't scrounge for in my old file cabinets.

There are some unclaimed assets for real c/o the State Controller's office, but be very, very careful of scam e-mails soliciting you to contact a private company about this, which you don't need to do at all, because you can contact the government office and check for yourself.

If you're dealing with cash, it's probably a quick process. I work in the securities industry, and stocks can take forever to be transferred back to you! I've helped clients with this several times, and it usually took a few months, even up to a year.

I had money in there but they made it nearly impossible to prove where I lived at the time. Utilities were in someone else's name.

I checked just for fun. I'm not owed a thing but my wife is - a walloping $.01 from Sallie Mae. I think we'll pass on the paperwork. California needs it more than we do!
