Default Tehachapi

Can I please get some info on Tehachapi? Is it to far from Edwards AFB to commute from? I am looking for a place to live with some running water, and pine trees. Is this Tehachapi? If so, where should I look at there? Is it to remote? Thanks.

They have a prison there so my guess would be most people who live there work at the prison, a prison town. Boring.

Tehachapi is somewhat remote but has the basic stores and a few restaurants there. It's a pretty area that experiences all 4 seasons. I have aunts and uncles and cousins who have lived up there for years and love it.

Schools aren't great though--I believe the school district filed bankruptcy. IMO, however, this town is the best of the choices available within commuting distance of Edwards. Any towns directly ajacent to Edwards are pretty crappy. Tehachapi would be your best shot at living somewhere halfway decent if you need to be somewhat close to the base. It isn't that bad of a commute.

If you want pine trees? The desert has zero.

Good luck!

Rayray, both Greenchili and jeffncandace have said it best so far. If you want mountains and trees (California Oak but not necessarily pine trees), Tehachapi is for you.

Those who work at Edwards AFB who desire mountains and trees live in Tehachapi. The other choices are desert, desert, and desert. I forgot to say one other choice: desert. (cymbal crashing at the droll humor!)

Actually there's Silver Lakes north of Victorville, if lakes are your thing.

Commuting distance is 48 miles, with 29 miles of that commute on California State Route 58, the major east-west highway between Barstow and Bakersfield. Since Tehachapi lies along a major state route, it's far from isolated. The mountains in the area will help to isolate you from others the farther out you go from downtown Tehachapi, which last I checked has a US Census population of just over 10,000.

Lots of ranches and acreage and suburban/rural enthusiasts in Tehachapi, and more of them are coming from the urban core areas of the Antelope Valley to the south (which gets a lot of its new residents from Los Angeles metro areas).

Bear Valley Springs and Stallion Springs remain the most popular and well known suburban/rural escapes in the area. Do take the time to check them out! One, Stallion Springs if memory serves me correct, has developments which are impractible to get out of in the winter in the event of snow (yes, Virginia. . . Tehachapi gets snow) So if your supervisor at Edwards won't stand for that, don't buy in that kind of development!

Best thing to do though, is simply visit Tehachapi. Then you will know if this is what you want. Many folks do like it there, and at the moment it's the popular anti-city small city near the Antelope Valley geographical area. Visit, see the sights, and talk to the folks. . . and feel free to ask more questions here!

FYI my aunt and uncle live in Bear Valley--it's a great community, they absolutely love it. The only downfall I would say is it's a bit remote, and the fire hazard gets bad in the summer.

The longer that myth can be perpetuated... the less crowded it will be.

Tehachapi is not a boring prison town.Tehachapi is where people from Bakersfield move to escape the big city. Tehachapi has seen quite a bit of growth but still has that small town feel. They actually just got a Starbucks.lol Bear Valley Springs is the most remote but has the best views. If you like nature.

One of the best things about Tehachapi it's not in Los
Angeles county Tehachapi is in Kern County, And that's a good thing.
