I read a newspaper article a very long time ago about a dialect coach who worked in many Hollywood motion pictures coaching actors to learn various regional accents (forgot his name ). Anyway, in the article he asked the reporter to say, "He taught the tot", after which he told the reporter he could tell she wasn't from California. The dialect coach went on to say that Californians will pronounce "taught" and "tot" the same way. I know I do!

Except in the Bay Area. That's the "caught/Cot" merger:

Quote:
Most speakers do not distinguish between /ɔ/ and /ɑ/, characteristic of the cot-caught merger. A notable exception may be found within the San Francisco Bay Area, whose older native inhabitants' speech somewhat reflects a historical East-Coast heritage which has probably influenced the maintenance of the distinction between words such as caught and cot.

^^Come to think of it, I did know someone at a company I worked for long ago (a manager) who was born and raised in the Bay Area, and I did detect an East Coast-sounding inflection in his speech, which I thought was interesting.

During a military career, on several occasions people that I met told me I sound as if I am from the East Coast or New England. I was born and raised in California. Don't know where that accent came from, but I have always found it interesting that more than one person made that remark about my speech.
