Hi,
My husband may be offered an excellent job that is based in Delano, if offered he will take it. So I have been looking at the area's surrounding to find a decent place to consider moving too. Most everything I read is bad! Bakersfield, Visalia, Delano, Porterville, Kern/Tulare counties etc. Everything I read says: Crime, Smog, bad people, bad area's, gangs, etc. I really don't want my husband to miss what may be a fantastic opportunity, but I also don't want to move to some horrible place! I have 4 children ages 3-19 and we would be moving from Cape Cod MA (I have lived here my whole life) so culture shock is a definite!
I am hoping some folks on here may have some advice/idea's of decent places to live in this vicinity. I am a liberal, not sanctimoniously religious and very open minded, I have read there are a lot of conservative types in this area but do not know what that means exactly.
I know I am asking a lot of questions about a large area, sorry!!
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks

Culture shock? You don't know the half of it. From verdant and green, ocean breezes, loads of history to the dry Okies, a comparitive cultural desert, dirty air and stifling heat during the summer, gangs, NASCAR and mud rains. I can't even imagine the transition.

I love Cape Cod! My family originated in New York, Connecticutt and Massachusetts.

Culture shock for me, not my husband who has lived in Guam, the USVI (NOT the touristy parts) and FL. While likely very different than CA, GUM and USVI are third world type area's and he was fine. Me, visited but never lived there.
The Cape isn't all that anymore, lived here for 38 years and really have no desire to stay. The schools suck-pulled my kids out, the people are rude/ignorant/selfish/etc, the tourists are enough to drive anyone crazy.
This job, if offered is a wonderful opportunity for my husband so I won't tell him to pass it up just b/c of cultural/weather changes. Just hoping to find somewhere decent to move to.
I have no idea what an Okie is either...

Thanks-would you say north or south? I've read that north is better, but then again, I've read a lot of contradictory info so I really don't know what is what

Also for anyone who might know-I was told Visalia is a better area, but have read also that its bad, so again the contradictory info is killing me!!!!
Thanks

OP, for shortest commute, looks like your choices are limited between Tulare and Bakersfield with the latter being the larger of the two. You don't need to worry about being the only liberal -- there are plenty liberals who have relocated to the Central Valley.

Think Dust Bowl and Grapes of Wrath.

Best of luck. I think you, and especially your children, will need it.

Visalia would be a good choice. It's a nice, moderate sized town (for this area). I have a friend that works for their police department, and she loves it. The housing isn't crazy expensive, but there are plenty of nice places to live. It's also a short distance to Delano. Visalia is a pretty town, too. I've spent a lot of time there, and enjoy it.

Curmudgeon, my Grandparents are "Okies" and have built a wonderful farming life here in Central California. Some of us do love this area, though it's sad to see many of the smaller towns (such as where I live) going downhill due to gangs.

Still no idea what you are talking about, sorry!
Thanks-even though I think you are being sarcastic-hard to tell via typing...
