And typically, the less safe areas may have other costs that offset the cheaper rents, such as higher car insurance rates...the effects of crime. You are much more likely to get your car broken into if you live in a bad area, and that can easily be $250 for a small broken window (It happened to me recently...2 times in 2 weeks = $470).

I have a no-frills studio in downtown San Jose for $850. That is cheap for this area, though...and they haven't raised the rent on me in 3 years (which is very unusual).

I did. But maybe you missed when I did say, "Some areas might be more of a safety challenge than others. But then California is a very large state, so it wont be impossible." ...Because I know for a fact, from living in them, that they do exist... in 'urban' areas.

San Diego, you can get a room for $595 a month with cable tv. Boise, Denver, Portland and Spokane you get a studio for $500 or less even now.

its possible but you have to be here and check the local papers. I found a spot in on a quiet hillside in Glendale for $550 a few years back it was nice studio with a full kitchen. I found it in a local trade paper not online. In fact the lady who was renting the place was against listing online.

This brings up another point. It's much easier to get a good housing deal after you've lived here for awhile. It takes time to get to know people, etc. Many of the best deals are not advertised, but come through friends, aquaintances, and word of mouth.
