There is something I've figured out since I've been doing some genological research. I grew up in the Califonia of the 50's and sixties. Before that, there was a great midwest invasion. All of my family is either southern or Iowa/Missouri. The effect on the culture in California (especially socal) was to exert a very strong midwestern influence.

Since then millions have come from other places and redefined the culture. But here in Oklahoma I feel much more like I'm living in the California I remember than if I lived in California today.

It's said there has been a great migration back by children of the dustbowl, but that wouldn't include me or all the others who are multi-genenrational natives of Califorina. I think for those of the boomer years, its the society that is remembered that makes up for the interesting weather.

That is disheartening to read, because I would like to relocate there.

The entire culture is getting "worse over time".
Don't let a comment like that discourage you.
Just research, explore, and go into a move with eyes wide open.
Dream but keep your feet on the ground.

I moved to WA state in 1979 and returned to CA in 1988. I was going to make a killing in the RE business. My 2 year old came to the back sliding glass door one day and started jumping up and down yelling "It's a sunny day".

Of course she now lives in Seattle. Go figure.

Barely escaped with my sanity intact. Haven't had a single desire to live anywhere else except on the Sea of Cortez in La Ribera.

I'm still here, and I love it.

Long Beach and surrounding areas used to be known as "Iowa of the West."

I moved out of California in the late 60's () ... wandered back east a year, mid-west a couple years, and then out to Seattle -- where we stayed home-based ever since. Of course I also continue to maintain permanent addresses in both Hawaii and California to cover the half a year I can't survive in the NW ... When the four kids + fosters were growing up we were so busy I hardly had time to notice the weather north ... but as they graduated school my periscope went up ... seeing nothing but gray ...

Went to Atlanta. Had indicated I wanted a job at this company's Miami location, but it turned out I could be accommodated in Atlanta.

I'm not saying I don't love California, but I wish I had remained in Atlanta for a multitude of reasons.

I often wonder what the "retention rate" is in WA and OR for Californians who move up. What percentage stays and what percentage returns? I know that the weather hits a lot with depression problems they previously did not have.
