Moved to Kentucky after getting married to my wife who was still finishing up university. We have been here 10 years and never planned on that. Neither of us are from KY we kinda just got stuck. Now we plan on moving back to California. Thank gawd! We hate it here. We love the people but hate the culture and rough winters.

LOL, I agree (it is a desert after all), and never said I'd consider moving to Las Vegas. I only mentioned Nevada had no state income tax, because the poster said "Entertainment Capital of the World (no state income taxes...)" so that ruled out L.A., CA and brought my mind to Las Vegas, NV in terms of where the poster moved to.

It was not you I was referring to, it was the fellow who said he moved to the "entertainment capitol of the world"

Nevada is a great state, outside Clark County. Las Vegas attracts a low rent crowd because of the huge number of poor paying casino jobs. It isn't a very classy or interesting place to live. Unless you like the big shows and gambling and buffets.

Neither are a lot of places in California. It's pretty pathetic you keep harping on other people's decision to live in a place they feel they have a better life than they did in Ca. To each their own, CA is paradise to everyone or even livable for some.

Oh, I just assumed you were referring to me since the poster didn't list weather as one of the reasons they moved out of CA, and I did.

Sure, it is. I loved visiting Reno when I was younger (haven't been in awhile). Always fun (I was addicted to those pinball/horse-camel racing game at Circus Circus as a child), and delicious all you can eat food/restaurants (fist time I had stuffed mashed potatoes and salmon- so good) within the casinos.

Kentucky's good about that...getting you stuck. It's like the real Hotel California, "you may check out anytime you like, but you may never leave."

Those are two of the reasons I want to leave Kentucky badly, much more so the culture. Although you have to admit that our winters are NOTHING compared to the winters in, say, Chicagoland or Michigan. California and Texas are top runners; Kentucky pride runs deep and I'll always be proud to be from here, but it's time to move on.

By the way, I see two western Kentucky cities in your profile. I was actually born in one of those towns and return to W. Ky. to visit relatives probably 6-8 times a year. One of the biggest (yet few) advantages of remaining in Kentucky for me is to have that proximity. (At least you're close to Ferrell's Hamburgers and some good BBQ!)

Best of success to you! Which part of CA are you moving to, if I may ask?

Not my fault if people move to dumps. There are plenty of places that are interesting, fun, worthwhile, for instance, as I said, Nevada, north of Clark County.

However it is true that most people don't really care where they live as they spend their time indoors. If you like houses next to each other, lots of malls, and chain stores, streets full of people, then it matters very little where you live.

However, if life means living, having adventure, getting outside, then it matters a great deal where you live. Fortunately California has more interesting and beautiful landscapes than any other state, that makes it worthwhile to live here.

Nevada, has 300 mountain ranges, it has perpetual snowfields, and great empty wilderness, and then it has Clark County.

If you are a young person interested in a vibrant outdoor life, then Northern California (that is northern, not the bay area) the East side of the Sierra, and Nevada, among others are where you need to be.

I recommend Alturas or Elko for any young or young at heart adventurous person.

Great question! Left beautiful San Luis Obispo California 7 years ago. Husband had a job opportunity that required a move near a big airport. We didn't like the idea of LAX or SFO, so we headed to the Seattle area where other family had moved recently.

Ummm... here's the thing. Really don't like it here. When people try to tell you that it rains less than.. say.. Miami, they don't tell you that the 38" of rain comes 1/8" at a time over 7 months or so out of the year. No, really. It's pretty gray and wet from Mid-October until June. And sooo dark. It's 2 in the afternoon right now, and I have to have all the lights on in the house, and it's mid-April.

You don't see your neighbors for months at a time. Outdoor cafes are a rare sight, unless it's July-August-September. Then the mole people come out of their little hidey holes and wander around in a daze under the bright sunshine, our paper white skin reflecting in a ghastly glow. lol.

I miss California. Yeah.. stuff about it sucks. But you know, like choosing a partner, you have to realize that every place/one has issues. You just have to choose the place/person whose issues you can deal with. I need sun and I need the ocean. I miss the laid back attitude and warmth of the people in California. It just does not exist up in this area, no matter how perky and outgoing you are. It's hard for people to be cheerful, I guess, when they're damp all the time and bundled in fleece. I don't know about you, but it's so hard to smile when your feet are cold and wet.

So yeah.. thinking about making the move back. You guys think the traffic is bad there, that's only in the metro areas. It's just as awful up in Seattle, but maybe worse because of all the water around you and only a handful of freeways. I may consider Oregon, but it'd need to be drier than where I am... and I would still miss that vibe.

The point is that it's just so subjective. One person's paradise is another person's doom. I know people up here who grew up in Minnesota who pine for it. I know people who live in the coolest beach town in California, but long for their home in Oregon. And people living in Hawaii who miss their home in Seattle, and vice versa. Some people luck out and find their "home" when they move away from where they are living. Others leave their "home" and long to come back. Home may not be where you grew up, but you always know where it is.. and sometimes you have to leave to find that out.

You really have a hard time grasping any point of view and opinion aside for your own apparently. What you may consider a "dump", others may not. And considering some of those dumps are probably places you've never lived, or even visited, then you aren't that informed to make such a judgement.

Unfortunately all those interesting and beautiful landscapes that CA possesses still doesn't make living here worth it for a lot of people. I know that must be hard for you to grasp but try closing your eyes and thinking really hard than not everyone values the same thing you do. Many people would hate living in the middle of nowhere type places you seem to be advocating.

Wow, I didn't realize it was so high there, we're paying $0.085578, Seattle is $0.0461 for the first 10 KWH/day, then $0.0956 after that.

A comment on traffic. When I used to sit in a jam on 680, 580 or 17 in the Bay Area there were like 6-8 lanes in each direction backed up, and lots of exhaust fumes. Here, the same kind of backup may take as long, but it's only 2 lanes in each direction and you still have clean air, plus snow-capped mountains and water to look at.
