Default Point Mugu/San Diego Bases

Does anyone on here work on any of the military bases located at Point Mugu or any of the bases in San Diego? If so, how is it? Thanks.

I worked at Point Mugu from 1986 to 1997, F-14 program. At that time it was a great place to work. The F-14 program is gone now but a lot of my old buddies are on EA6B, E-2, and missile programs out there. I don't know what the health of the employment situation is there now. Check with the Northrop Gruuman and Raytheon (Hughes back then) employment websites. Mugu is now sort of combined with Port Hueneme, together they are called Navy Base Ventura County. There have been good engineering jobs at both sites. A security clearance is required for virtually every engineering position out there.

It is an awesome place to work "at", by that I mean there are so many things to do in the area at lunchtime: surfing, mountain biking, hiking, year round lap swimming in the outdoor pool, basketball in the gym, fitness equipment for working out, soccer, racquetball, outdoor inline hockey rink, road cycling.....all these things at lunchtime! We had basketball, volleyball, softball, and flag football leagues after work too. There is no road traffic anywhere around there which makes taking a bike ride down the coast at lunchtime a very beautiful experience. You could not work "at" a better place. You can head into Oxnard for a variety of ethnic lunches.

Some civilian employees (including me) were lucky enough to get backseat rides in fighters (F-4: Mach 1.1, 6Gs, also F-18).

Both Mugu and San Diego are located near very expensive housing (I think we all know this). Mugu is located on the Oxnard plain surrounded by farming. Most people who work out there live in either Oxnard or Camarillo if they are single or Camarillo or Thousand Oaks if they have kids. Get this: Back in the late 1980s, everyone was getting "geographic" related pay increases to offset the "brain drain" due to the high cost of housing and back then an average Ventura County home was around $250K. The situation has to be much worse now. A young person out there will have a very difficult time finding a decent place to live.

Like mentioned above, there is no commuter traffic from the neighboring towns: Camarillo, Oxnard, Thousand Oaks, Newbury Park. Venutura and maybe Santa Paula may be a little more of a drive but not that bad.

Nowadays, there are probably more jobs in the region should you live there and want to change jobs.
