Okay, I am a transplant from Chicago and have lived in Central and Northern California for over 10 years.

What exactly is the problem with using or writing the term "Cali"? People get really upset when they read a poster using the term "Cali" and I was just wondering, is there a specific reason? Or is it just that most people do not like the way it sounds?

Just makes the user sound very ignorant. These same users will correct a person on the correct spelling of their home state. Cali, Columbia is in South America.

Yeah, I have no idea...but whenever I hear someone say "Cali" or "San Fran" I immediately know they are not from CA. Haha. I think it's a sociological anomaly.

or Frisco.

California is a pretty cool word. Rolls off the tongue, just saying it evokes images of golden beaches, palm trees, redwoods, high mountains with high waterfalls.

Cali sounds like a place for a cartel.

I don't mind Cali at all, nor do I mind Frisco or San Fran.

False. I was born and raised in CA and both of my parents were born and raised in CA, so I'm a true native, and I say Cali sometimes. I don't ever use it on the internet or anything but in casual conversation, usually when I'm talking to a younger, hipper crowd, I'll use it. When I'm talking to old farts I wont though, because they'll be like "What's Cali?" It's kind of ghetto and annoyingly trendy but who cares, sometimes I don't feel like saying all four syllables. However, when I hear people say "The OC" that really crawls up under my skin.

Personally I don't use Cali but that is only because I have lived here 50 years before people really started using that abbreviation.

I see no reason for people to get upset over it. The whole purpose of a language is to communicate and it rarely is not clear what is being discussed. In fact, I think it sounds pretentiousness to complain about something so trivial as an abbreviation. Especially on something so casual as this.

It sounds immature. Would be like someone calling Dallas "Dali". Just sounds stupid.

Hence, the "younger, hipper crowd" use it.
