I am not sure the mall in SM is any safer for this guy than it is for you or me, or that there is anything in there anyone from Los Angeles would want to buy
Well let him decide and Santa Maria has Macys and Costco and Trader Joes.

Look, he is going to college to get the best education he can, not going shopping. Jesus kid, maybe half your problem is that you have your priorities screwed up.

If the best school for his major was on the dark side of the moon, that is where he should go, that is where his parents would expect him to go.

My point wasn't that Santa Maria has good shopping, my point is that Santa Maria has some nice things to to it like weather, diversity, hikes in Orcutt, close to beach, and it's more of a city feel.

Education isn't everything. It's one of many factors. Cost, entertainment, opportunity for jobs after graduation and internships, safety and comfort, and location are all key factors too.

Again, let him decide. You can state all the facts you want, but don't try to push a decision on him. He might like the city life and feel he can succeed in an environment he knows. You need friends and other things in college to succeed. While I lived in the city I didn't fit into the large city's environment, but I still passed classes but it was coming to the point where I couldn't. Then I came back home and everything in my life did better.
