Hey, I'm new to this forum and am looking for some assistance. I am currently planning on attending school at college of the redwoods and planning to transfer to HSU afterward. I am 31 and have wanted to attend college for years now, but didn't have the oppurtinity. Well, I have now saved enough to live on for a while and have decided to finally attend. The reason I chose this area is because I have had an interest in the Marine Sciences. What I really want to know is, what are the nicer areas in Eureka/Arcata to rent an apartment? I have narrowed my search down to a few, but would like some advice before I jump on one of them. By the way, I will be moving into the area from out of state. Thank you for your help in this manner.

Sunny Brae in Arcata. Rolling wooded hills with some sweet houses and it's near the forest. Can't beat it.

Sunny Brae is good but you'll pay more because it's in Arcata. If you're going to do two years at CR (and a lot of students end up doing THREE years at CR because of not being able to get all the classes they need-cutbacks) I would recommend my neighborhood, Cutten. It's midway between CR and HSU (8 miles either way) , safe and woodsy. There's also Sequoia Park with hiking trails and a Zoo which is a delightful place for a stroll or to study. ($25 per year buys you a Zoo membership with unlimited access- park is free,) In general the West side of Eureka can be sketchy, the East and south sides are better. If you decide on Arcata,start reading the Arcata Eye online. They carry the Arcata police logs which are hilarious but also very informative. Local Eureka paper is the Times-Standard, and the North Coast Journal is a good weekly, although going through some internal tumoil. You have made a good choice for that major. Welcome to Humboldt!

I didn't think of that, cutten is a LOT closer to CR than Arcata. Good call. One other thing is, in my experience the nightlife in Eureka was generally a bit better suited for me as I also went to the area at around age 30. The Arcata square is populated with a lot of youngsters
which is OK but after a few years I found myself spending more evenings in Eureka at THE SHANTY! Students there too, but also a few more working-class locals which for me was more interesting.
God I miss Humboldt, what an awesome place.
