Hello,

For my work in sociolinguistics, I need to collect information about Americans' view on the linguistic diversity across the United States (if you are foreign residents, your opinions are welcome too).

My question is: According to English-only movements, English should become the official language of the US. What do you think of this argument?

Your participation will be really helpful.

Thanks in advance,

Chimène Elessa

In terms of doing business, workplace language, signage, education (but for foreign language classes), testing and licensure of all types, English should be the only language used and accepted. What people speak in their homes, within their families and their own ethnic groups is not an issue.

English should be the official language of the US and of course knowing another language (any language) is always an asset. The two questions really aren't related.

I think a lot of anti-bilingualism is because Americans associate Spanish with poor Mexicans and Central Americans who are overrunning some parts of the country like Southern CA. Nobody wants to associate with the less fortunate. If Mexico were an equally wealthy or wealthier country next door and the emigration went the other way, Americans, including Californians would be falling all over themselves to learn and have their kids learn Spanish.

Horse manaky. How about nobody wants to associate with illegals or have this country turn into a third-world nation like the ones they sneak in from?

If I wanted to live in Mexico or South America I'd move there. I don't want them moving here.

It should become the official language, but I don't think there should be a law so that we can penalize non-English speakers. Instead, we need to cut back in offering signs and translation in other languages.

Bilingualism is always an asset for Americans and Hispanics -- including those who are unwilling to learn English while they are residing here.
