Default Carmel visit with kids...is it possible?

We have lived in the central valley for 4 years after moving here from Japan with the military. We have traveled a bit in California (Yosemite, San Francisco, Napa, Monterey, Anaheim, and San Diego) This weekend I will be meeting some out of state friends who will be staying on the coast and would like to meet in or near Carmel. I have two children (6 and 8) and they are without kids (newlyweds). We plan to spend a day together. I think my kids could last about 1 hour at the art galleries/shops. Any other ideas?
Thanks!!

You could always go to the beach for a picnic and some tide pool exploration. If you find yourself at the Barnyard go by Pieces of Heaven and let them get whatever chocolate/candy they want and sit in the courtyard while the women go shopping. That shut me up when I was their age. How about renting some bicycles and just touring around? You could hop over to Monterey for the aquarium and wander around Cannery Row. Take them by the customs office museum and California's first theater. You could go on a whale watching trip. One thing I've always wanted to do is go kayaking on Monterey Bay. Might not work for 6 & 8 though.
