San Luis Obispo in northern or southern California?? (San Jose, Sacramento: college, rated)

Hey everyone, I recently moved from San Jose down to SLO to attend Cuesta College. I have heard some people say that San Luis Obispo is considered NorCal and other say it is in SoCal. So does anyone that is from San Luis Obispo know which one is actually correct? Thanks.

None of the above. SLO is in Central California.

I would actually say Northern. But it's the far far southern end of Northern California. I divide the state at the 35th parallel.

This is a fun topic, with hundreds of posts on many threads going back years on CD. Depending on your viewpoint, just how, where, and how many regions California should be catagorized into has generated some interesting and creative opinions.

I like that idea a lot. I think they should use a rule like that to make an official definition of northern and southern California, it would make things a lot easier!

Sorry to burst your bubble but SLO is Central California all the way, at least culturally speaking (I don't know about dividing the parallels and stuff into only two parts). Just watch the news, they refer to the region as the central coast. Even Monterey and Santa Cruz are often referred to as Central California, most notably on surfing websites and in surfing books (Though most Santa Cruz locals refer to the area as being Nor Cal).

I've seen some kids in that area wearing hoodies that say "Mid Cal".

SLO is in southern CA, and there is no such thing as central CA.

Central California. Regionally, they define themselves as the Central Coast, which most people consider the area between Santa Barbara County north to the Monterey Bay. The other subregions of Central California is the San Joaquin Valley, usually referred to as the Central Valley (San Joaquin to Kern Counties) and the Southern Sierra (Tuolumne to Kern).

It's just weird to think that SLO should be in the same region as Crescent City, 500 miles apart. SF and LA are only 375 miles apart and are certainly not part of the same region.

Does anyone remember proposals about 20 years ago to divide California into three independent states of NorCal, Central Cal, and SoCal? NorCal was going to go from Marin to Oregon, Central Cal from SF (and including Sacramento) to Santa Barbara, and SoCal was from Ventura to Mexico. The problem is that the state is really long, and while SoCal is often considered to the be from Ventura south, can the entire rest of the state really all be NorCal? That would make NorCal like 500-600 miles long, running along 6 parallels, and SoCal only about 200 miles long, and only along 2 or 3 parallels. I like the 3-region breakdown better. The difficulty is that the Bay Area would be at the border between the Northern and Central regions and would have people arguing over what area they belong to. We have elements of all parts of the state coming together here into a real melting pot.
