I just got a letter that I am at the top of the Housing Choice Voucher (Section 8) waitlist for Fresno County. I applied because the waitlist was open. I have never been to Fresno in my life.

I am a single disabled woman in my twenties. I have always lived in rich white suburbs with my parents. I really want to live on my own.

Where in the county (not the city) should I look?

Safety is my first concern. I do not intend to put myself in dangerous situations but some people see me as an easy target. I have a service dog that must be walked before bed.

My second concern is something to do. I cannot work but I need something to do to pass the time. Ideally I would like to take a class at a community college. Other places that would work would be adult education, town recreation, or an open minded senior center.

I do not mind diversity but I do not want to be the only person that does not speak Spanish. It brings back bad memories of middle school when the only lunch table I could sit at was the Russian table.

In the end it will probably come down to whether there are any one bedroom rentals that have reasonable rent as determined by the housing authority, can pass inspection, and the landlord is willing to take a voucher.

Other than the greater Fresno-Clovis area, Fresno County is very rural. There are smaller towns/cities, a few with a population in the 20,000 to 25,000 range, most are much smaller than that, and most of them are majority Mexican.

If you are looking for a town with a community college I suggest looking at the web pages of the State Center Community College District and the West Hills Community College District for towns with at least a satellite campus.

I'd stay away from West, South and Central Fresno... most anywhere in Clovis is fine but primarily north of Herndon. It's cliche but you can't argue with the facts.

Thank you for the answers. I know Fresno County is rural. I like the small town feel as long as there are regular community events, farmers markets, high school sports, etc. I believe my voucher will not work in the city of Fresno. I am limited by the payment standard, $652 for rent and any utilities, so most of Clovis is out of my price range. Actually I think most rental housing that can pass inspection is out of that price range but I have to try.
