Help me find my perfect desert town
Hi all,
I promised myself by the time I was 30 I'ld live in the desert. I'll be 31 in a week and it's time to go. For reasons of state Medical I've got to stay in California. I'm a straight white gal who's idea of a good time is going to the library and lying out in the hot summer sun with a book. I'm considering the Coachella Valley, and possibly Apple Valley and Victorville. Where would be a nice quiet desert town for me to settle in? I'd prefer not to be involved in criminal activity. Thanks!

How about Death Valley? I hear it's a true desert town.

Middletown in Lake County is a nice little town. Though strictly speaking it's probably not considered desert, it Does get very hot and dry there. And there is a sweet old-fashioned library and a little brew-pub and some antique shops....
Check it out

My cousins are in their thirties and live in Palm Desert. They have also lived in La Quinta, which is right in the same area (close to Palm Springs). They love it! From what I have seen, it's a nice area and also has some good nightlife in certain areas.

I like all of the Palm Springs area. There are many affordable areas in the whole valley too.

I like Apple Valley. They've got a nice library- just moved to a new location about five years ago. Plenty of parks, too. I enjoyed hiking in the desert hills to the west while growing up- it's definitely a desert! I never had a problem with criminal activity, though I'm sure you could find it if you looked. There are some areas to avoid- mostly north, I think.

Palm Springs, La Quinta, Palm Desert, Rancho Mirage, etc. I doubt the other places you named have decent public libraries because they are all smaller cities. I worked in Palm Springs for 15 months and I used their public library a lot, and it's a good one! In fact I still have my PSPL library card, although I doubt I'll spend enough time near PS to use it ever again.
Keep in mind the difference between the high desert and the low desert. PS is in the low desert, Victorville is in the high desert.
I've even considered moving to PS once or twice myself, particularly when I worked there. Unfortunately the company had a management change and my nice job came to an abrupt end.
