I read the article and most of the responses on CNN... The S***TPIT that CA is (or became--I don't care really if it was this way already 20 years go) is a disgusting place.

I had lived in all parts of California over the last 15 years, on and off, for a total of about 10 years. I came to intensely HATE this state and right now am packed up and ready to move away.
Yeah, I came there too with "California dream"--being young and dumb, and blind to what's going on. But you can't live your entire life in a pile of garbage that is about 98% of CA cities (YES, I INCLUDE wealthy neighborhoods like Newport Beach). The ONLY area that I consider kind of decent and livable is Los Altos Hills, but I can't afford it, you got to have millions (STILL, is is ovrer-ran by spirit-less, disgusting YUPPIES now, soulless dotcom dogs, who take their brood everywhere trashing places like public library in Los Altos because they turned it into a noisy daycare--they have NO manners or respect and neither do their entitled brats). NO culture there.

Many responses to the article were saying: "But CA is beautiful, you can't beat it!" Well, that's ALL that CA still has going for it... and when humans will be WIPED OFF THE FACE OF CA, by the Big one, CA will still be beautiful, even more so. Anyway, the beauty of CA has nothing to do with the point of the article, that the HUMANS run the state downhill. Natural beauty can get really old if it's not backed up by other things human needs to live, including intellectual/spiritual things.

And in Seattle... oh HORROR... I saw a regular Seattle local girl don't street cleaning job that is usually done by illegals in CA. So, Americans are willing to do those jobs?

When I came to CA at age 24 I'd write a reponse to that article about MY CA dream.... about how gorgeous the weather and nature were, diversity, interesting foreign cultures, accepting and laid back people, large art community, creativity, etc. But now...

So, CA weather is "good"? Sure...Yeah, horrible, unbearable ENDLESS SUNSHINE... may be good for someone with naturally dark skin. NOT for White person. All whites who look great when they're sunbaked teens here, look like S*** when they get older: red, burned skin, like cooked crawfilsh (eeek!), or leathery deeply wrinkled skin, ugly sunbaked look, age spots all over on their skin (no wonder all the laser procedures are popular). I wised up after one year here and hid from sun at all times. I can't take it anymore: having to cover up or wear umbrella while it's hot as hell, covered up while driving too, cause sun gets through windows. TIRED OF IT! Want EUROPEAN SUN, EUROPEAN CLIMATE, NATURAL FOR MY BODY.

It's HOT as hell in Southern CA. I can't explain how humans can tolerate this heat... 90s, even 100s, but I can't take even 80s for more than few days in summer. NO seasons, monotonous, boring weather--this is maddening, makes you feel trapped and craving for season change. Especially when your biological internal clock is prepared for seasons since childhood. You call this a nice weather??? No, thank you.

As to the "beauty".... well, it's kind of beautiful, especially I like Redwoods areas, but the rest pretty much got old for me--I feel landscape is too desert, especially in the South, but it's BARREN-looking everywhere in NorthCal south and east of SF as well. I like Big Basin, Sequoias, etc, but I can visit these places on vacation just as well, cause I don't go that often. After seeing the beauty of OREGON mountain forests, most of CA ain't got nothing on it---only the most northen CA can compare, but it has NO JOBS (except weed growing), so one can't live there unless they're on retirement.

People....THIS IS A HUMAN TOILET, waiting to be flashed, like someone had put it, by the Big quake. By the way, when it hits--THERE'LL BE NO WATER HERE, AND PEOPLE WILL BE KILLING EACH OTHER IN THE STREETS FOR WATER. Got help you when ghetto people steal or break your car during riots that will follow the quake. I don't want to be in SoCal is the quake hits, not cause I fear the quake itself, but cause there will be NO water anywhere after that, and Katrina mayhem will seem like a nice tropical vacation compared to the hell that will break loose in LA. SO CAL SHOULD NOT EXIST, it has NO OWN WATER, it is not a sustainable place, neither LA nor SD. The future water crisis will be a lot of fun even without the quake....

So people here.... After visiting OR and WA, I can not think of living in CA again. It was refreshing to visit places free of mindless materialism and shallowness, see abundance of educated AND intelligent people (these two things don't do hand in hand in the US, often), more spirit, awareness of environment. In CA, it's all trashed.... either its OUTRIGHT GHETTO S******PITS, dangerous and criminal, full of homeless harassing people on the streets, thugs and drugs, OR FAKE MATERIALISTIC empty clueless HEDONISTIC competing with the Johnses people. SD is a hedonistic, spirit-less, insipid, beach mentality-oriented place....full of unnecessary SUVs showing off whos' got a bigger one, full of fake plastic people, Beverly Hills-wanna be housewives, snobs, ETC. Los Angles, FULL of disgusting misogynist, IMMORAL "culture": of television and movies, prostitute "actresses", PORN (LA toxic "culture" is POISONING ENTIRE WORLD AND DON'T CRY WHEN SOMEONE OVERSEAS GETS FED UP AND DROPS THAT BOMB ON IT!). Stupid wannabes flock here in droves.... end up being hookers and drug dealers (yes, sleeping with a producer makes you a hooker). Full of drugs--90% of LA youth is hooked on drugs or using and I don't even mean harmless, in my view, weed.
Immorality, STD, about 1/3 to half of teenagers infected with stuff like genital wart/hpv virus, every third person having herpes in LA (yep, this is true). Younger people sleeping around like dogs, sex-focused mentality, following brainwash of Hollywood, people looking like hoodrats thinking they're looking "hawt". Third world mentality, and aggressive, nasty ghetto people full of social and racial hatred. (DON'T TELL ME THIS IS NOT TRUE, NO NEED TO LIE--I SAY IT LIKE IT IS). Toxic, polluted UNLIVABLE environment is a part of what makes people angry and mean in daily lives, not to mention traffic and hours on freeways.

SF Bay area? Crime, homeless, FOREIGNER YUPPIES driven out population that was there and laugh about it, CULTURAL VOID, whole areas of snobby smug hollow-eyes yuppies, software industry drones, parts of it being yuppie playground, parts are most dangerous SLUMS like Oakland, boring culturless area, with all creative people driven out by astronomical prices. Sacramento? Sacrimento. Good luck to those who buy in "nice" areas north of Sac thinking they'll be isolated there. Wait a few years and the scum will spill everywhere and will trash you lives, and will be robbing and killing in your nice areas. This is a future of CA--giant ghettos, isolated gated communities, cutthroat life, crime, destruction of environment. Should I mention Inland Empire? I guess I shouldn't, you don't go there, unless you want to buy drugs (and get a nice smog treatment for your lungs)... oh wait those gangs now are coming to your nice neighborhood, so no need to drive to buy the stuff. Meth capital.... There're semi-ok pockets, like Menifee... but wait 5 years and call me back--when economy deteriorates (and it will), there'll be the same mess there. Coachella valley? Unlivable climate. When I turn into a cactus or lizard, I'll consider moving there.

Especially I LOL at someone posting about "Newport Beach", how grand it is... that clueless dimwit doesn't know about that air pollution levels are very high in NB and get higher north up the coast up to Santa Monica, I guess? Oil refineries, a little clue....NB is a fake, stucco macmansion spirit-less area, I wouldn't want to live there for one week even, because the beach thing would get pretty old after 3 days.

OR and WA are extremely refreshing places compared to this hellhole of CA. It was like being back to Europe, where I grew up.
To make it clear, I'm not someone who "couldn't make it" in CA and became disgruntled--with 2 engineering degrees, I can make it anywhere where tech industry is, this includes China, the future owner of CA companies and real estate--cause US government doesn't bother to protect its borders from "investors" and foreign workforce that doesn't wish to assimilate, who're really nothing but invaders.

And in Seattle... oh HORROR, I saw local Seattle girl doing street cleaning job that is usually done by illegals in CA... so Americans are willing to do these jobs? Who could think?? And there were no Spanish-speaking requirement like for the most of low-level jobs in SoCal--?

Must be a calm and reflective sort.

That is what the Californios said in 1846.

Remember, there are 62 roads that leave this state, none of them are toll roads.

Meanwhile back at the ranch, it has been pretty hot around here lately with the muggy monsoonal flow, temps got up into the 80's. Reminded me of last January when temps got up into the 80's. But today there was a little marine layer. Cooled things off, I jeeped down into our pine grove with a wood cutter and arranged for 6 or 7 dead pines to go away so I can replant with redwoods. Keeping grandfather's grove going for my great great grand children.

My wife went off to her part time job as "master gardener" a question answering and resource person for local gardeners, since everything planted grows and grows well here in California her job is not too stressful.

later today she will get a massage and meet with her personal trainer. I will spray some herbicide on the noxious vegetation that loves to come up in our riparian areas. Amazing, what comes up after disking, castor bean, poison oak, morning glory, nightshade. I will spray and plow and spray and plow then seed and grow a meadow, the horses like that. All nicely shaded by the tall pines, fewer now than before because of that darned pitch canker, but, they will be replaced by sequoia sempervirons. It will be a nice park like grazing area.

Later today I will ride the moto around, then out to the end of the third pier for one of Pete's Tacos and watch the sailboats dance around the bay. Really, a casual day after a somewhat late night celebrating a birthday at a local Japanese restaurant with 20 very well dressed Cal Poly students.

The tops are off the Jeeps, until October, the summer evenings are mellow.

I have no idea where

Keep talking....I leave you to being looted and raped in the future riots, to your beloved boring insipid culturless-ness (but someone like you must be very satisfied with it, aren't you? You are, cause it's your element. You would be way uncomfortable in a different kind of place), precious smog particles--don't want to take any away, your crawfish wrinkled skin, fine trans fat-eating, ghetto banger-filled gyms, your opportunity to be a crime vicim--don't want to compete with ya for that. Hurry up, your fave TV show is starting. I'd stay out of future cartel growing grounds, thats' too... they lourve the redwood soils.

toHellwithCA;19929902]Keep talking....I leave you to being looted and raped in the future riots,

Shoot kid, we haven't even locked a door on the house in 30 years, not too worried about all the middle class folk rioting.

to your beloved boring insipid culturless-ness (but someone like you must be very satisfied with it, aren't you?

Well, it would be cultur[e]less-ness, if it were true, but I have tickets to the Dave Stamey concert in a couple of weeks. Riders in the Sky are coming to town in a few months. I was in a great local brewery the other day, and round up this spring was great, nice cow girls in wranglers and tri tip barbecue.. Don't know what kind of culture you like, but ours is great

You are, cause it's your element. You would be way uncomfortable in a different kind of place),

Like whatever kind of place would that be? There is a great new supermarket down the road, Vallartas, it is like a clean well lighted [ I got that from Hemingway, speaking of culture] Mexico, great food, great balloons, great chicken feet

precious smog particles--don't want to take any away, your crawfish wrinkled skin, fine trans fat-eating, ghetto banger-filled gyms, your opportunity to be a crime vic[t]im--don't want to compete with ya for that.

Funny boy, You may not be aware, but smog is endemic only to a few corners of this thousand mile long state. We sure as heck have never had it.
Crawfish wrinkled skin? Huh, Crawfish are crustaceans, they don't have skin, wrinkled or not.

Do steak and ribs have trans fat? If so, I am in big trouble
.

Ghetto banger-filled gyms? Not that I would ever darken the door of some artificial indoor psuedo exercise joint, but nobody in the local gyms but well toned athletic hard bodies, and that is just my wife.

your opportunity to be a crime vicim-... Ya know, I am starting my 6th decade in this fine state, and I have yet to be a crime victim, aside from having a pair of skis taken off my porch in Tahoe 35 years ago (some illegal skier I guess) Like I said, we never lock our doors and seldom take the keys out of the ignition, mebbe you picked a bad place to live, people do that you know.

Hurry up, your fave TV show is starting. I'd stay out of future cartel growing grounds, thats' too... they lourve the redwood soils.

The Western channel is always on. and I am usually in the cartel growing grounds, me and the campesinos got an agreement. I don't smoke their weed, they don't eat my horse.

And know, they don't lourve the redwood soils.

"It's all fine" said the Boer.... SA circa 1990.

"It's all terrible" said the Bore, CA circa 2011

They just can't leave without their vitriol. They're like bitter, jilted lovers.

My guess is that whatever hopes and dreams they had, failed. They did not fail because of anything organic to the state, but, they need to blame.

I don't know what "dream" young and dumb people have when they move here but it's just a state, not a magical place where all your fantasies come true. It's not here for your enjoyment or entertainment.

CA is just my home so there was never any "dream" to fizzle. Do people really look at STATES and places that can make their dreams come true? WHY?

Probably the movies, media, tv, etc.. They've done a real good job at selling this image of CA, both good and bad.

I agree with everything you said, it's just home and not some magical place that will fulfill everyone's dreams. Personally I get fairly annoyed with all the attention Ca gets, wouldn't mind if the media and rest of the country just forgot about us and stopped talking so much about this state.

Then you need to get out there and talk to people, visit the rest of the country, etc. Think from the perspective of a bright eyed young adult born and raised in a small town in the middle of the country, what opportunities do they have exactly? Magical place where all your fantasies come true? How...lame. Nobody is thinking that...

The "dream" they have is to make something of themselves, something that isn't going to happen in their hometowns. California and the NYC metro area are magnets for people looking to escape their upbringing, places where they can "make themselves" on their own terms.
