Three hikers went over Vernal Falls in Yosemite on Tuesday. Such a tragedy at such a beautiful location. People need to respect the barriers and be careful in the wilderness. I feel for the people that witness this event.

one of the beautiful things about yosemite is the lack of fences and signage that would otherwise disrupt natural environment. i hope this unfortunate accident doesn't change this.

"According KSEE in Fresno, witnesses say a man and a woman climbed over the safety rail at the top of the falls so that they could put their feet in the water. The couple then reportedly tried to get their children to join them, but before the kids got there the couple began to slip. KSEE is reporting a third male family member jumped the railing to try and help, but all three went over the fall."

If you have been there, that railing is right next to the dropoff at the top of the falls. Only an idiot would ignore the posted warnings and climb over the railing. Sad, but there's not much else the Park Service can do.

2 people went over the railing of THAT, that looks like the railing is only 5 feet from the actual falls. I am sorry but those people had it coming for them when they went over that railing.

That location has more than its share of numbskulls.

One time, I witnessed a ... um ... threesome ... complete slickers (as well as slackers, sickos, what have you).

Hairless (presumably even ... um ... there as well) man hunk was just beyond the rail ... quickly pulled down the rear of shorts (apparently was going commando) and BAed two babes one of whom did snaps. It was one of those moments when you realize the gene pool is whacked.

People climb over that rail all the time. Another pic: http://150mph.planetrambler.com/0906...090611_374.jpg

There are lots of photos on Google Image Search of people who have hopped the railing. I love this guy: Top of Vernal Falls | Flickr - Photo Sharing! (http://www.flickr.com/photos/ryangrimm/909383872/ - broken link) His attitude is pretty common: "Yep, that's me and I've jumped over the railing that is suppose to keep me safe at the top of Vernal Falls, I never was much of a conformist."

Well, it's certainly stupidity. That said, it's sad that the penalty for stupidity has to be death. 99% of been stupid at one or more times in our lives.

And will that stop others from doing this in the future? Nope.
