Is it a bad place to live? The crime stats didn't seem high, or any higher than anywhere else. May visit lompoc while I'm in the area in September. So why the low rent?

Are you thinking of moving back to California? As for the rents, Lompoc is not excactly the showplace of the world nor is there much going on there. Why, so cheap? I don't think many people are standing in line to live in the area or some of the surrounding areas, not much going on, no jobs, etc. But if this doesn't matter to you, sure visit and see what you think.

There's a few reasons for that. One is it is cheap compared to most parts of CA due to the higher crime rates. While violent crime isn't so much of an issue, vandalism and burglary are pretty high for this small of a city from the large number of gangs that find their home here. Another, main, reason is how rural Lompoc is. There isn't much going on, so it isn't a desirable place to live compared to everywhere else. Personally it isn't a great place to live because there isn't much to to and you are at least 30 min away from any real amenities in Santa maria.

When Santa Maria is your "go-to" place for fun and thrills, you're not exactly living large.

By SB County standards it is more cold and windy than many other places. The landscape is less interesting than places like Los Osos (hills are smaller, fewer trees, etc). Lots of turn over due to Air Force comings and goings. Proximity to Federal Prison (although, that does mean jobs).

Yup,the prison means jobs! But many folks decide to stay and retire here from the AF,we did. Its
not a bad little town. We are used to the weather!
