Santa Maria to Buellton - 35 minutes.

Santa Maria to Santa Barbara is 80 miles, so that's 70 to 80 minutes on the freeway depending on what parts of the cities and how fast you drive.

I wouldn't go through Cachuma Pass as there are a lot of accidents there and it doesn't really save any time anyway.

If you're facing a daily, 8-5 type commute, you must be prepared for less than wide-open roads. Around 10,000 to 12,000 commuters travel between Santa Barbara's north county and the south coast every weekday. If this is the case for you, consider alternatives, Traffic Solutions Online.

The Clean Air Express is specifically geared to north-county residents who work on the south coast. Don't know much about the newest transit addition, but it might be worth a look, MTD Valley Express. Also Amtrak's Surfliner has one morning southbound/evening northbound schedule between Lompoc and Goleta/SB. Good luck!

I live in Lompoc and it takes about 30 minutes give or take a few to drive
to Santa Maria. And SB to Lompoc is about 45-60 min. depending on where in
SB you are comming from.

The fwy is much smoother than the pass, which has lots of ups and downs, with curves. You need to watch all the time plus they get long lines of traffic behind slow campers, hard to pass etc. I used to take the pass all the time many years ago then almost had a very bad accident there on a curve - never again.

Regarding drive times, it also depends on how fast you drive. I'd recommend keeping to the speed limit as a lot of people get pulled over, especially between Los Alamos and Buellton. Or else just stay with the flow of other cars but no faster. Mapquest has a good guide to routes and times for arrival.
