We've been hearing a lot about NY challenging Silicon Valley lately. Mainly from NYC Area officials who have been chomping at the bits to overtake SV, but this latest data indicates that Wall Street does not have the know-how of nurturing tech companies like Sand Hill Road does.
Let's hope it stays that way--LOL.

Thanks for posting that. Gives perspective of how puny San Diego is in comparison to the Bay Area, probably the most economically thriving place on the planet.

tech bubble 2.0!!!! i just hope the tech growth we've seen in the last year (the last few months especially) is sustainable. regardless, this map shows that no other locale in the country (let alone the rest of the planet) is anywhere near the bay area when it comes to technnology. i work for a software company in LA that is based on the peninsula and every time I go up their work, I'm blown away at the size of the industry. My only concern would be the lack of diversity when it comes to the economy up there (outside of SF anyways), but I don't think the tech sector is going anywhere any time soon.

Suspect data for VC investment erroneously mixes in some private equity/LBO investment
On "classic" VC start-up investments vs tech, would guess PaloAlto/Menlo/MV area captures closer to 80% of all dollars invested globally by any leading VC or angel investor
But dollars invested is meaningless as most VC investments (esp green/clean and biotech, etc) end up as failed, social engineering causes
Real measure of success is examining stock market value of cos. HQd in a region: PaloAlto corridor has more >$100Bn mkt cap cos. HQd than any region on planet....and perhaps <100K people actually live/work in PaloAlto tech corridor as engineers or execs, as SJ is largely a slum and SF is primarily a slum that has maybe 10K yuppies who work in PaloAlto and choose to reside in SF
Always amusing when one examines puny total mkt cap of tech in Seattle or Bos or TX or LA/Irvine/SD, or EastBay or City of SF....and when one examines how few valuable start-ups are based anywhere outside PaloAlto (SF's Zynga and twit are puny vs fb)....Manhattan's only valuable start-ups are a few hedge funds; almost no smart engineers have ever chosen to work or reside in Luddite commie Manhattan
Didn't the fb clowns attend Harvard lib arts and choose to move to PaloAlto, upon advice of their SandHill-based VCs, instead of building the social media co. in Bos region? Which MIT alums have started valuable tech cos. anywhere in past 25yrs? Are there any smart VCs/angel investors who aren't based in SandHill corridor?

The Bay Area's economy is actually pretty diverse. Besides tech stuff, there's Oil/petroleum products (we have a few of the larger oil refineries in the US here, and Chevron is based here), the port of Oakland, which is the 5th largest in the US, finance (Wells Fargo, Charles Schwab, Bank of the West, etc), non-electronics manufacturing (Tesla, Clorox, etc), medical (McKesson, Kaiser Permanente, etc), biotechnology (Genentech, Gilead Sciences, etc), we also have Bechtel, the nation's largest private construction/engineering company.
