Good day. Seeking advice. Am thinking of moving to Southern California from Maine. I am a single parent who will be moving at least for the short term to help my daughter (22 years), who is in a wheelchair, settle in a community that is best for her. The following criteria are important: cultural/racial diversity, relatively affordable housing (she may not be working or working that much due to her disability and I have modest means), accessible public transportation and accessible streets, buildings, and community, social supports/services for person with disability, socially progressive, prominent presence of the Arts, mid-size city at most, intellectually stimulating, near a warm ocean.... Thank you for any guidance you can offer. Billy

Southern California housing near the beach isn't usually considered affordable. Just to give a reference point, she may be able to find something for around $1,400 per month.

It's not always warm at the beach either. If warmth is a huge consideration, you may want to consider something further inland. Our beach weather can be foggy and cool, even in Summer, but usually in the 70's. It is also less expensive for housing further away from the beach, but the weather can be in the 90's.

What rent range were you considering? That would be a big help for anyone having suggestions.

What do you consider to be a Mid-Size city? And why is that important?

You are far more likely to find the things you want in particular neighborhoods in a bigger city.

For example, right off the bat, in San Diego I would recommend North Park, South Park, University Heights, and Hillcrest. The first two neighborhoods because of the arts, the second two, because of proximity to health services. However, San Diego is a big city.

Coastal urban California is extremely expensive--the Bay Area, the Monterey/Santa Cruz Area, Santa Barbara, San Diego, the LA/OC area, etc. So make sure your budget can handle it.

Honestly I would look at coastal Florida. Anything right on the coast there is extremely expensive but you can live within 10-20 minutes of the beach without breaking the bank if you're somewhere like Lake Worth. Plus it's easier to get to from Maine than California is.

The beaches are freaking cold here, and housing is a pretty penny, esp the kind you desire. I would check out S. Carolina or Florida.

Default Best cities - some suggestions

Pasadena is a great place to live...city college (PCC) is great. Housing prices are somewhat affordable - along the outskirts. Nice cultural diversity...
but can be hot in the summer.

Moving west will keep you on one coast. Moving down to FLA might mean you could visit Maine...

I know that FLA is very affordable...

I love Maine, but I don't think I could deal with a long winter....!
