Actually, the entire state of CA is loosing population along with FL, NY, and I think MA. International immigration is the only thing keeping CA's population growth positive (also important to note that the census does not differentiate between legal and illegal immigration). It's the classic picture of demographical adjustments being caused by increasing economic pressure.

Spend some time at US census website and compare the information.

Someone also mentioned school enrollment issues - Places like Santa Ana, Elk Grove, and San Francisco are having to adjust their budgets because they are not gettting enough enrollment. This is due to a significant outflow of families from these areas into more affordable markets, ie. out of the state.

No, it isn't "loosing" population and I just looked at the U.S. Census site for confirmation. Explosive growth rate has cooled a little for the state as a whole, if that's what you might be trying to say.

California is loosing population and growing at the same time, but this growth has slowed down a bit to around 300,000 yearly.

Thumbs up Time to go!

My wife and I are looking to move out of the state. We're tired of the commute for work; I'm spending close to 4 hours a day in the car now --- just nuts! We have lived in other areas of the country, most recently Washington state. The Seattle area is rainy and expensive, the Eastern side of Washington is dry, warmer and beautiful. We have been back here for a year now and we are ready to leave. Once you've been away for a bit you realize how much nicer life is elsewhere. You know, where you can buy a great home for $250K and actually afford to make a principal AND interest payment -- not just interest, and still go on a vacation for a couple of weeks each year and GASP!! put money into your retirement. I know....all crazy ridiculous things, but yes, you can do that in places outside of overpriced immigration crazed California...

Up here in the real Northern California, that is the part north of Sacramento, I have lived here all but a few years of my life and 50 year working career. You could buy my custom built (2001) home at Goose Lake near the Oregon Line for 500k complete with a 30 car garage with a hanger in one end. Yep I collect pre 1930 cars, the cars wouldn't go with the garage. I'd just build another one on the property next door.
