Am I still on the right planet?

Quote:
Legislation now pending in the California State Senate would require people who employ domestic workers to not only pay them minimum wage, but also pay overtime and provide workers' compensation.

The bill, AB 889, is being called "the Babysitter's Bill" and it is generating a storm of controversy on the Internet.

The measure would apply to all domestic workers, including nannies, housekeepers and caregivers over the age of 18.

What seems to be the problem? Why shouldn't babysitters get overtime (assuming they work more than 8 hours/day) and worker's comp?

BTW, the claim about mandatory break periods from the article seems to refer to an old edition of the bill, it's been struck out.

California being the Nanny state is the problem.

Timecards, providing overtime pay and workers compensation for babysitters. Does this mean that family parents will also be considered as small businesses to be subjected to California's regulation as well?

Do you really have to ask? As one who worked with - actually more like around - them for almost 20 years, I can assure you that they're almost all batty, on both sides of the aisle.

Now then, what does that say about the collective intelligence of those who keep returning them to office and then vote in their familiy members when the idiots term out or get elected to higher office?

By the way, you're on Planet Nanny!

Hmm. Indeed, next thing we know, some liberal politicians in some blue state might also require people to use E-Verify to check their babysitters' immigration status.

Oh wait.

By the way, going in the other direction, would you also argue that babysitters should not be subject to minimum wage laws? Is that part of being a nanny state?

Oh wait.

I have no problems using E-verify to check immigration status. In fact, it is standard protocol at my business. But don't you find it hypocritical that some of the liberal politicians are actually against this?

Then explain to me why this bill is very selective on who gets minimum wage. The bill, as it stands, only require that minimum wage be paid to anyone over the age of 18 but not for minors. Does this mean that minors who are employed at fast food restaurants can be paid under the minimum wage?

We should have uniform standards for all employees. Liberal politicians prefer it that everyone is paid overtime and no one is forced to use E-verify. (It's not a particularly reliable system, anyway, and it is not the responsibility of private employers to enforce federal immigration laws. If the feds want to deport all illegals, they should do it on their own.) That is reasonable and consistent.

What's hypocritical is when someone wants to subject babysitters to E-Verify, but deny them overtime and workers comp. That creates double standards and a class of "lesser workers".

Well, yes. A babysitter is a "lesser worker." I baby-sat for years, and sitting around while kids nap or play with toys is a mite different than on-your-feet slinging french fries for minimum wage.

I can tell you--if you work minimum wage, or not much above it, and are a single mother, and now have to pay minimum wage for the sitter, the next item on your list is chucking the job and signing up for welfare. And how will that help our economy?

Exactly! I showed the article to a co-worker and she said she'd be better off on welfare until her daughter goes to school full-time.
