You're going to have to be more specific. Where do you want to live? North or southern CA, near the coast, in the desert, in the mountains, urban, suburban or rural??

Do you have a job lined up? CA has 12% unemployment. Were you planning to come here and get in line with the 1 out of 8 Californians looking for a job??

Good luck!

Yes, California is a huge and diverse state both culturally and environmentally.
You need to be more specific as humboldtrat said.
What can you afford?
For diversity and tolerance living on the coast and specifically in the bay area (San Francisco) might suit you best or even a bit south of S.F. in the Santa Cruz area but it is hugely expensive to live here.
In my opinion living in So. Cal is, at this point in time, a crazy choice but many people are attached to what they think / imagine it to be.
Have you looked at craigslist to get a sense of rental (assuming you'll be renting) prices in various areas of the state?
It's absolutely insane and since you're coming from the mid-west you might be quite shocked at the cost of living.
