More Than 6 Million Californians – Over One-Third of Them Children – Lived in Poverty in 2010

Census Bureau data released today show that the share of Californians with incomes below the federal poverty line rose in 2010 for the fourth straight year. The state’s 2010 poverty rate rose to 16.3 percent, the highest rate since 1997 (Figure 1). More than 6 million Californians – nearly one out of six – had incomes below the federal poverty line. In addition, 2.2 million of the state's children – nearly one out of four – were living in poverty in 2010 (Figure 2).
The new data also show a sharp drop in inflation-adjusted income for the typical California household. The state's median household income dropped by $2,602 (4.6 percent) to $54,459 in 2010 – the largest single-year drop on record (Figure 3).

If one out of six lives in poverty and that includes one out of four children then the impoverished are cranking out WAY too many children to swell the welfare roles.

Your CA tax dollars hard at work!

Once again, another unfortunate national trend that affects California as well.

California's 16% child poverty rate and Texas' 22% child poverty rate are both cause for alarm.

Sad.

The Census Bureau counts illegal aliens, so their numbers and children would be factored into the figures provided.

If they wish less child poverty among illegals, then maybe someone should inform them that the unemployment rate in Mexico is 4.7 percent and that GM is building a multi-billion dollar facility for car manufacture.

Maybe its time to head on back home...

And with luck, they'll take their U.S. "champions" with them!

I agree. When CA stops rewarding these cows for giving birth to children they can ill afford then perhaps the standard of living will increase. We know of a family in northern CA whose daughter got pregnant while unmarried, lost that baby then decided to get pregnant again and had a million dollar premie that the taxpayers had to pay for. She just had another welfare baby in June. She is married, husband is working but they receive all the Healthy Baby benefits shelled out to the underemployed. This second child was also planned. She also has a degree from Chico State. So when does this give away end? Oh the real kicker is they want more children. Thank you CA.

But it is sadly more comfortable here for most of them. Mexico won't support their poor and let us pick up the tab. I think the UN should push Mexico to develop a welfare program that mirrors ours. There is a lot of wealth in Mexico to spread around.

And how many of those children, I wonder, weren't alive in 2009. No matter how bad it gets, stupid people don't stop having children they can't afford.

25% of American youth (citizens not illegals) are too fat to enter the military, and guess what, illegals did not cause that.

... and then there's those people that, no matter how bad it is, don't stop living in Missouri ... who can explain human intelligence -- or the lack thereof?
