Its an ancient practice that's evolved over the centuries into a polite social norm. It has nothing to do with being religious one way or the other. A handshake once signified that the two parties weren't holding any weapons. I doubt it means that now - again, its a polite custom of greeting. That teacher's a bit clueless.

Time to bring back corporal punishment in schools I have taught in the classroom (high school) then moved to subbing (high school) and there were many times I would have given anything to go back to the old days with some of those delinquents!!!

The sneezing and "blessing" are all about disrupting the class...it's an old trick. I know, because I'm old and we even did this back in the good old days. Has zero to do with religion or anything else.
