I say "bless you" and have all my life. Even in Spanish, French, German, Arabic etc. they also have a phrase to use when someone sneezes.

What's the big deal? The "God" part?

Seriously? Don't teachers have enough on their hands without wasting time on something like this? Geez.

As someone who's ardently non-religious, I think the teacher is wrong.

Someone says "bless you," I thank them, because they believe in a god and are asking that god to give me blessings (something positive).

some people in some areas want to make religion mandatory

some people in some areas want to make religion extinct

how about everybody just lets each other be?

Ironic isn't it that when the teacher redressed the student he became an offender of bringing his own religion to bare in school.

Having taught in the classroom, I know that sometimes students can be disruptive - for example, if the kids started to say "bless you" en masse. However, the rule is to keep disciplinary issues separate from points on an exam or homework - though the instructor can deduct credit for homework turned in late if he/she has a stated policy in place.

The teacher should not have penalized the student on the test for that. If student was disruptive - address that in other ways.

omg, guys it wasnt merely for saying "bless you"

apparently the kids were "fake-sneezing" and the students were saying "god bless you" is a very loud, obnoxious, and disruptive manner. They were basically playing a joke on the teacher by pretending to sneeze and then responding with a over-dramatic "bless you"

it wasnt because of the religious connotation, rather the students were being disruptive

That's what I was hinting at - the sneezing en-masse as a disruptive action. Thank you for the corrobration.

Again, the teacher can take action against the student (s) but penalizing the student on a test is not appropriate.

Without comments from the teacher or the school, that article should never have been published.
Pure gossip-mucking journalism at it's worst.
